Yesterday, I walked with BWLA of Greater Chicago, Inc. at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Chicagoland Walk to prevent suicide. This walk of “remembrance, hope, and support,” held during National Suicide Prevention Month, was powerful. Those affected by suicide shared their experiences, and more than 6,000 people joined together to raise funds for education, research, and advocacy around suicide prevention. According to research published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, during the past two decades, suicide rates have increased among Black women, with the rates more than doubling among Black girls and women between ages 15 to 24. It was therefore incredibly meaningful to walk with these women to raise awareness and show that no one is alone. Thank you to BWLA Treasurer Alexandra Rogers and BWLA Mental Health and Wellness Committee Chair Omoyele Ajayi, Esq. for organizing our involvement in this walk. And thank you to BWLA President Weeya Baysah Y. for highlighting mental health as an integral part of her bar year theme--Bright. Bold. Balanced. If you or someone you know is in a crisis, call or text 988. You are not alone.
