The ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather

The Victorian Government has just released Victoria’s Climate Science Report 2024. The report incorporates the latest climate projections for Victoria, and the science of climate hazards relevant to Victoria, including floods, heatwaves and extreme heat, drought, bushfire, and sea-level rise. Thanks to our partners at the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action for inviting us to contribute to this report.

21st Century Weather supports the recommendations made in?A Decadal Plan for Australian Earth System Science 2024–2033. The Decadal Plan has been developed by The Australian Academy of Science’s?National Committee for Earth System Science (NCESS). Members of the NCESS include 21st Century Weather?Chief Investigators?Julie Arblaster,?Negin Nazarian and Claire Vincent. The plan calls for the urgent establishment of a national institute responsible for coordinating the science required to transform Australia’s response to climate change. Congratulations to the members of 21st Century Weather who received the Monash University Vice-Chancellor’s award for Research Team of the Year. They were represented by Director Christian Jakob and Chief Investigators Ailie Gallant, Shayne McGregor and Marty Singh at the awards ceremony this week.

We recently enjoyed an amazing week in the Hunter Valley during a joint annual workshop with our colleagues at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes. The two centres came together to advance our collective understanding of weather and climate. We made lots of new friends and expressed our heartfelt thanks for the hard work of many, including Andrew Pitman, AO, FAA and Melissa Hart. A big thanks to all the organisers for their efforts arranging such a special event, and to all those who travelled from across Australia and around the world to be involved. Now we’re more excited than ever about the research challenges and opportunities ahead!

Really pleased to announce Aon's latest climate academic partnership with The ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather! This new Centre of Excellence will be a key focal point for #climatescience in the #indopacific region until 2030. This report, published every 2 years, draws on the latest national and international climate research, monitoring, science and projection information, to describe changes and long-term trends in Australia’s climate, now and into the future.
