Imagine predicting the wind flow around you with precision – perhaps to find a refreshing breeze on a hot day or a sheltered spot when it’s chilly. Until now, such predictions would require solving complex physical models on supercomputers – far too demanding for personal devices like smart phones and laptops to handle. Research undertaken at UNSW, led by Jiachen Lu and Negin Nazarian, have changed that. The team, based at the?ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes?and 21st Century Weather, have developed a model that anyone can run – accessible, lightweight, and requiring no advanced expertise. Our review on what causes Australian droughts has just been published. This ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes and The ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather team project was skillfully led by Dr Chiara Holgate. It is a testament to the research advances and early career researcher development that make Australian Research Council Centres of Excellence such an impactful part of our research landscape. https://lnkd.in/gK6dGVrE

Impact attribution can help us to look beyond local extreme events to their global consequences when fairly calculating Loss & Damage. Led by Camille Mora, this interdisciplinary study featured our Chief Investigators Lisa Alexander, Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick and Andrew King. Collaborators included Arunima Malik, Rupert Stuart-Smith and Thomas Schinko.

Job opportunity: We are recruiting a Research Fellow based at The Australian National University in Canberra. The successful candidate will undertake research to investigate small scale atmospheric and oceanic processes and their role in setting the mean state. They will run coupled experiments with the ACCESS climate model at varying resolutions to address this question. To excel in this role you will have a strong track record of independent research in the field of climate science and the ability to articulate and prosecute innovate research. For more information and to apply, follow the link below. Applications close on Sunday 20 April.

?? How can we advance extreme event attribution? The study of extreme event attribution, which links extreme weather events to climate change, has grown rapidly in the last 20 years. New methods and better models have been developed, making it easier to show how climate change affects real-world weather events. However, according to the latest World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and Frontiers research, important challenges still need to be solved to ensure it stays accurate and useful. ?? This article highlights six key areas for improvement: ??data collection ??defining extreme events ??statistical methods ??physical models ??linking impacts to climate change ??and communicating findings effectively. ??
