Kirtland Air Force Base has unveiled a new weapon in its security arsenal: the Mountain and Desert Defense Team (MADD-T). Officially launched on February 1st, this specialized unit within the Security Forces Group utilizes all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to patrol the base's expansive perimeter, significantly bolstering security and situational awareness. MADD-T's value was recently showcased when they were called upon to assist the 377th Range Operations and Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department in a search and rescue operation over the weekend. This joint effort, which also saw Kirtland deploying personnel with Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) capabilities, involved the search for a missing elderly woman. The Kirtland teams worked tirelessly alongside local authorities, providing essential manpower and aerial support throughout the day and into the evening. Read more here!

Kirtland Air Force Base concluded a comprehensive week-long?incident response?training exercise, designed to test and strengthen the base's ability to respond effectively to a variety of potential emergencies. The exercise, held annually, focused on interagency coordination and preparedness for a simulated aircraft accident. The exercise provided an opportunity for local, state, and federal agencies to collaborate and refine emergency response procedures, reinforcing the critical relationships necessary for effective whole-of-government operations. "Interagency collaboration is essential to maintaining a high level of military readiness, and response task force exercises demonstrate our ability to work seamlessly with mission partners,” said Maj. Gen. Stacy Huser, Twentieth Air Force commander. “These exercises provide invaluable opportunities to refine our coordination, ensuring we can respond effectively to any scenario and safeguard national security." Over the course of 45 days, a team of 11 90th Missile Maintenance Squadron personnel orchestrated the transport of 16 individual components of a 79,000?pound, unarmed Air Force Global Strike Command Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile from F.E. Warren Air Force Base, to Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. The logistics operation, which spanned 1,287 miles, was executed through a series of carefully coordinated dispatches. Once the components arrived at Vandenberg SFB, the 90 MMXS assembled them for an operational test launch, which took place at 1 a.m. PST on Feb. 19, 2025. With approximately 250 launches conducted to date - including various test types beyond the operational test launches - these exercises continue to be a cornerstone in validating and refining the capabilities of the U.S. military’s nuclear deterrence mission. The combined efforts of the 90 MMXS, 90 MW, Vandenberg SFB and AFGSC ensure that the nation remains poised to respond at a moment’s notice. Read more here!
