This #InternationalPodiatryDay, we celebrate Special Olympics Minnesota Health Messenger, Nell, and recognize the importance of foot health among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Nell always wanted to pursue an active lifestyle but felt limited by problems with her feet. After years of not getting answers, Nell joined Special Olympics and met with a volunteer Clinical Director through the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes? Fit Feet program who fitted her for ankle braces. Equipped with proper ankle support, Nell was not only able to walk safely but also compete as a powerlifter. While Nell’s story is inspiring, her challenges are not unique. Individuals with IDD are at higher risk for adverse health outcomes that can impact overall well-being as a result of foot function. Based on screenings since 2007, 52% of Special Olympics athletes demonstrate atypical walking patterns and 62% are wearing the wrong shoe size. Through Fit Feet, Special Olympics is working to address the unmet podiatric needs of the IDD community, one step at a time. #InclusiveHealth

Flag Football is a great way to bring people together and celebrate the power of human connection! Special Olympics athletes get a chance to experience the joy, camaraderie, and personal growth that come with it – just like the professional athletes in the NFL.
