  • We weren’t planning to write about Franklin Guinn this week. We thought we were going to tell a short story about Black Philadelphians organizing public science lectures in the 1850s. But we picked up The Rise and Progress of Shiloh Baptist Church, written in 1905 by Guinn himself—and something told us to read it more slowly this time. That’s when we saw it. A single line about a concert. Then a few more details. Then a date. Then the realization that a Black man - born in 1839, who grew up in the 1838 Black Metropolis, a janitor by trade - had filled the Academy of Music with a 300-person choir and 18-piece orchestra in 1884. For Shiloh. And for the community. And somehow… that part of the story had been completely forgotten. This post wouldn’t exist if we hadn’t gone back to the source. Not just read about Black history—but read it directly from someone who lived it. It’s a reminder of why Black primary sources are essential ???. And why digitization is not a luxury—it’s a lifeline. Because if this book hadn’t survived, this story would’ve been lost forever. Read the full piece here: From Pemberton Street to the Academy of Music: How Franklin Guinn Turned a Childhood of Song Into an Unforgettable Concert https://lnkd.in/eAMuqDrU Let’s keep surfacing what’s been buried. Let’s keep reading the words our ancestors left us ??????

    Mellon Humanities Postdoctoral Fellow

Introducing: (In)Visible Architects of Freedom: African Americans in Early Philadelphia Digital Archive, currently live at https://lnkd.in/gneaTePT! I have been a partner of Independence National Historical Park for the past 18 months, as a Mellon Humanities Postdoctoral Fellow. This archive is my fellowship project developed from collaborating with teachers and students of the School District of Philadelphia and National Park staff. It is a project designed?with and for?educators and students. It serves as a central digital location with free, easy access to primary sources illuminating the community-building endeavors, achievements, and lived experiences of Philadelphia's Black American residents. We concentrated on the land and community right around the park in Old City Philadelphia. The primary sources date from when African people first arrived in the 17th century, in L?napehòkink, later known as Philadelphia, through Reconstruction at the end of the 19th century. Check it out to see primary sources, a map, timeline, primary source analysis worksheets, a self-guided walking tour around the land of the park, and a bibliography all related to early Black Philadelphia. We are continuing to work on the digital archive. Let me know your thoughts and how you'd use the resource at home, at school, on walking tours, or at work. I'd love to share feedback with the National Park Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.

One of the key aspects of my role at the International African American Museum is identifying at-risk African American records with a genealogical or family history focus. Suffice to say that what is happening at the US National Archives has me deeply concerned...and has me making crisis plans for IAAM digitization projects. The threat to public records access at NARA is real. This is something my research community needs to focus on and prioritize. For the foreseeable future, my efforts will be laser-focused on raising a small army of volunteers from the DMV region to go into NARA in DC and College Park, MD to digitize as many African American records as possible while NARA's doors remain open. I'm referring to this future team of amazing human beings as the Citizen Digital Volunteer Corps NARA's doors will close when (not if) this administration fires/furloughs the remaining NARA staff. Every day this digitization doesn't happen is another lost day before the inevitable happens. The record sets I am specifically focused on are: 1. USCT Pension Applications 2. Homesteaders Land Files 3. Buffalo Soldiers Service & Pension Files I will be posting more about the Citizen Digital Volunteer Corps. If you are chomping at the bit and don't want to wait for the formal invitation, please send me an IM.
