November News & Notes from the 161st Street BID - A Message From Our Commercial Revitalization Program Manager Michael Torres As we enter the final politically tumultuous stretch of 2024, the 161st Street BID is excited to share updates following one of the most exciting times in our BID’s tenure. The New York Yankees reached the World Series for the first time in 15 years—falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. Though they failed to achieve their elusive 28th championship, the businesses within the BID and the borough of the Bronx reaped the rewards of their success... Read more by visiting the link below. Thanks for having us 161st Street Business Improvement District!
Earlier this month, we welcomed the temporary art installation, entitled “The Big Apple,” to Downtown Jamaica. Designed and engineered by LeMonde Studio, a Montréal-based design and production firm, The Big Apple is the artists’ interpretation of how New York City represents so many different things to different people. For some, it is the land of opportunity and productivity. For others, it is all about creativity and inclusivity. For everyone, New York City is the Big Apple. The artists wanted to create a unique structure that welcomes all New Yorkers and its millions of visitors to stop and reflect in a space that symbolizes the endless opportunities and magical moments New York City has to offer. We are grateful to our partners at New York City Department of Transportation for helping to make this installation a reality, and are thankful for 161st Street Business Improvement District, Open Plans, Inc., Rojas AP and all those who joined us at the ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome the Big Apple to downtown Jamaica. The Big Apple is on display through January 2025. Read the full press release below.

Yesterday we welcomed friends and family to Mid-Bronx to celebrate the life of Joseph Mpa. We welcomed back the first Executive Director of the 161st Street BID Dr. Cary Goodman and others. We also announced the Joseph Mpa Community Service Award that will be given out at our annual meeting on December 5 to an individual or group that exemplifies the love for the 161st Street community like Joseph did. Special thanks to all that came out and celebrated a great man. Please be sure to visit the mural of Joseph at the community garden between Gerard and Sheridan Avenue created by?Andre Trenier. We will be working with the?the Horticulture Society of New York in 2025 to ensure this garden that Joseph took care of is the best that it can be.

From Schneps Media's Bronx Times: The New York Yankees brought the World Series back home to the Bronx for the first time since 2009 — and local businesses stepped up their game to host thousands of fans. Several hours ahead of Game 3 on Oct. 28, restaurants, bars and sporting goods shops within the?161st Street Business Improvement District?(BID) were packed with celebrating fans, both indoors and at tables lining River Avenue. And not all were ultimately headed across the street for the game: amid sky-high ticket prices, many were expected to watch on TV from the comfort of local businesses.
