Relative Scale was honored to partner, once again, with the Freedom Rides Museum and the Alabama Historical Commission, this time to create an immersive production for VR headsets that tells the brave and harrowing story of the Freedom Riders, who made history by challenging the practice of segregated travel through the South. My Project of a Lifetime???? The Votes for Women Room is a tribute to the long overdue ratification of the 19th Amendment, just 105 years ago! The amount of history we were able to preserve through Elaine Weiss’ research, the incredibly generous donations from the room’s donors, THOUSANDS of hours of intense effort from the board, Nashville Public Library , Nashville Public Library Foundation , Rachel Lawson, myself, Kem Hinton and Hannah Gompers , Dowdle Construction Group, LLC , Dalton Agency , 1220 Exhibits and countless others still makes me rock back in my heals. Without this effort, the documentation of the history in this room would not be accessible for EVERYONE to experience. PLEASE contact Nashville Public Library to set up a tour of this room. You can visit on your own anytime the library is open, but the library’s curated tour of this room, and the adjacent Civil Rights Room, is above and beyond. A number of us returned this month to hear the incredible Elaine Weiss speak on ‘The Woman’s Hour’ and ‘Spell Freedom’. What an incredible reunion with the women I’m lucky to call my role models, Jeanie Nelson, Margaret L. Behm, and Juli Mosley. I highly recommend Elaine Weiss’ new book, ‘Spell Freedom’, wherein she tackles the tough subject of voter equality past white men, next white women, and finally what it took (and is STILL taking) to ensure that all are truly afforded an equal right and equal access to vote.
