Do you aspire to be in television management? I tell people that being a manager is like holding a mirror up to your face that shows allll the ugly. When I look in that mirror, I’m am wowed by my shortcomings. There are so many! But here’s the beautiful thing. Leadership motivates you to continuously grow, face the uncomfortable, and strive to be a better version of yourself. If you want the best out of your staff, you’ve got to give them your best. This is why self awareness is such a key part of being a leader. Your weaknesses WILL be revealed. It’s up to you to tackle them, to make sure your staff isn’t suffering under your deficiencies, and to encourage them to speak up when they are stung by your flaws. After seven amazing years in Norfolk, I'm excited to share that I will be moving within TEGNA to our sister station in Atlanta, 11Alive! I start as an anchor/reporter later this month. This is a station with a strong legacy of local journalism and a commitment to winning the big story. I can’t wait to be part of the team's momentum led by Carol Fowler Denisha J. Thomas Kristie Gonzales. As for 13News Now (WVEC): It has been a privilege to anchor both mornings and evenings at a station that values storytelling and community.?I look back proud of our newsroom's work: From the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake mass shootings to hurricanes and tornadoes. Together, we navigated COVID illness and shutdowns and shared heartbreak over missing children.?We also celebrated milestones and shared 5 a.m. belly laughs. I will always be incredibly grateful to Tiaira Shoultz for recruiting me seven years ago and giving me a platform to tell meaningful stories. My thanks to Brian Gregory, Doug Wieder, Chris Gegg and Kari Philippi Jacobs for their leadership and guidance along the way.
