Last night we celebrated New York and the people who make it great. The New York Landmarks Conservancy honored a new cohort of Living Landmarks. Julian Chender MSOD, ACC and Jessica Phillips, MBA had the pleasure of joining Board Chair Lloyd P. Zuckerberg in recognizing significant contributions to the built environment and social fabric of New York City. Among the honorees was Jessica's longtime colleague Ann Ziff, Chairman of the Board of the Metropolitan Opera. It was wonderful to spend the evening in such good company -- friends, colleagues, and clients -- all in the historic rooms of the Plaza.

11A Collaborative consults to purpose-driven businesses, nonprofits, foundations, public offices, and government agencies seeking to increase their impact. We support them in defining and refining purpose and strategy, designing future-forward operating models and organizations, and stewarding change. Purpose + Strategy: An organization's purpose defines its identity and impact. Purpose and strategy are built on informed decisions that tell the world who you are, what you do, and how you do it. Our process starts by aligning the organization around the crucial decisions that inform your true north and the tactics that will take you there. Organization Design: The organization design translates strategy into impact by building the unique structure, processes and governance, metrics and rewards, and people practices your organization needs. We facilitate an inclusive process that brings together multiple perspectives to build a future-ready organization. Change Activation: This is the process of implementing a new purpose, strategy, and organization design. It requires a clear roadmap and deep expertise in organizational behavior. We offer a humanistic approach based in the practices of systems change to help your organization realize its desired impact. Executive Coaching: Coaching develops individual leadership capacity in service of organizational success. We offer one-to-one support for senior and mid-level professionals driving transformation. Our ICF-certified coaches engage you in generative conversations meant to bolster your ability to lead change. Reach out to learn more!

Doing more than your fair share? Working on behalf of others? Unable or unwilling to say no? There's a dynamic here... Over the last week, we have worked with individuals, teams, and entire organizations caught in the dynamic of overfunctioning and underfunctioning. This is where one entity does the emotional and other labor for another, while that other does less than is needed. This cycle mis-distributes accountability, ownership, and agency. It keeps both parties stuck in a system neither likes and it leads to suboptimal relational and organizational results. The concept comes from Bowen Family Systems Theory, which 11Aer Julian Chender MSOD, ACC had the privilege to study briefly with Kathy Wiseman and the The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family in Washington, DC. If you're interested in learning more about Bowen Family Systems Theory, please see their pithy and well-constructed explanation of the eight concepts of the theory: https://lnkd.in/eqHpJKDc. And see below for a description of overfunctioning at work.

This week, 11A's Julian Chender MSOD, ACC and Jessica Phillips, MBA spent three days with the fabulous Paul Tolchinsky learning Whole-Scale Change. This organization design methodology incorporates the whole system in scalable change. The foundational questions of Whole-Scale Change are: ? How do we design organizations faster? ? How do we help the many decide for themselves, rather than having the few decide for the many? If you want speed, reduce friction. If you want to reduce friction, increase engagement. If you want to increase engagement, incorporate multiple perspectives. We're thrilled to build this profound approach into our work creating healthy society through healthy organizations. Organization Design is a co-creative process. And that's not just for the client! Today, a client asked if we could rewrite a tried and true organization design process to fit her organization's unique situation. We were a little apprehensive about departing from what we've "always done," but what came out of our collaboration was a better fit for the client system. The takeaway: Consulting is about influence, two-way influence. We must be open, willing to be swayed and touched, just as much as we touch our clients. We must be willing to go on a learning and growth journey, just as we ask them to. And we must remember that while we may know a thing or two, what we create together is what matters most. A huge thanks to Edgar Schein for instilling the beginnings of humility into our practice.

11A Collaborative is rooted in the gritty beauty of New York City. And so, after a week away, we go to Eisenberg’s to refuel body and spirit.
??Friday Recharge?? After a deeply satisfying (and tiring) week of group process and strategy workshopping, I’m recharging with the sandwich of sandwiches, the Mel Brooks at Eisenberg’s. Feeling full of love for my social impact clients doing the hard work to do good in the world, and to my colleagues in the field for continued support and camaraderie. And, after Eisenberg’s, feeling just, well, full.

Had a wonderful time touring The Rockefeller Foundation and having lunch with my dear friend and colleague Mies. Fascinating conversation about philanthropy, especially the questions of corporate v. private and local v. global. And spectacular views!

11A Collaborative turns 30 days old today! Below are some reflections on the last month...
Today marks 30 days of being a solopreneur. In reflecting on this milestone, I have come to realize that being a business owner is to be in a state of constant listening and learning: about your clients, the market, and yourself. To mark this occasion, I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who has, whether knowingly or not, provided meaningful and sometimes tough feedback. ? To the advisors who have offered guidance and shared the mistakes they made in their journeys — thank you for sharing your wisdom and helping me see myself in my business...? ? To my friends and colleagues who have referred me for work — thank you for seeing my passion and helping me share my it with the?world...? ? To my partners and clients who have trusted me as an advisor —thank you for helping me discover new ways to add value and showing me where my skills fall short of your needs — you are helping me refine my practice in real time...? ? To the people who didn't take (or appreciate) my calls — thank you for letting me know why so I can better?understand how I present myself to network and connect with a new community… I have deep appreciation for you all in helping shape my burgeoning practice with 11A Collaborative (11Acollaborative.com). It has been 30 days of stretching outside my comfort zone, and I feel eager to continue learning and growing as I strive to create healthy society through healthy organizations. I’ll let you know how the next 30 days go... Photo is of a card a dear friend and colleague sent me. It's over a year old but I think the message applies now!
