3 ?????????? ???? ?????????????? ????????????! Image Sensor Structures to improve color rendering in low-light conditions. As pixel size continues to shrink, more pixels are packed in a smaller package. Today’s smartphones have image sensors with 100 million pixels packed in the same areas as 5 million pixels were packed ~15 years ago. However, these smaller-sized pixels suffer from lower photon collection and hence offer weak SNR and poor color reproduction in low-light conditions. To improve on the performance of these high pixel-density image sensors under low light conditions, companies like IMEC, VisEra Technologies and Samsung Semiconductor are doing R&D into light-guiding structures to be embedded onto the image sensor during the manufacturing process: 1. Color Splitters 2. Nano Light Pillars (NLP) 3. Nano Prisms (NP) The feasibility, cost effectiveness of the processes involved plus the IQ improvement needs to be thoroughly tested against conventional microlens arrangement. Nevertheless, it is very interesting to know that the semiconductor ecosystem involved in the image sensor manufacturing process has not abandoned the pursuit to better the optical properties of the image sensor, and are investing to better the technology for tomorrow’s image sensors. ??Check out this article on IEEE Spectrum to learn more about these latest developments in image sensor optical meta surfaces: https://lnkd.in/dRV7QA-F
