?? Say hi to Alyssa Rupp! She’s one of our award-winning graphic designers. If you’ve ever stopped to read a wayside sign on your favorite trail, used an orientation kiosk to get your bearings, or explored an interactive exhibit filled with eye-catching visuals—chances are, someone like Alyssa was behind it. She plays a key role in shaping the visual storytelling of our interpretive projects across the U.S. We sat down with Alyssa to talk about what goes into interpretive design—how color, typography, imagery, and layout come together to create engaging and meaningful experiences for visitors. This #WomensHistoryMonth, we are taking a closer look at the favorite objects from members of our staff. Today, we are spotlighting Dr. Michelle Commander, Deputy Director, whose favorite object is a Cabin from Point of Pines Plantation in Charleston County, South Carolina: https://s.si.edu/4iju99j. “I selected the Point of Pines Plantation Slave Cabin in part because I am a descendant of enslaved people from South Carolina, where I grew up in the shadows of the very plantations on which my maternal forebears labored. As a scholar of slavery and its global afterlives, I find the history of the families that lived in this cabin breathtaking, as it quite literally demonstrates how close we are temporally and otherwise to that brutal era. The cabin's presence in the museum—and the fuller story imparted throughout the exhibitions in this space— offer lessons for our times, reinforcing the humanity and sheer strength of African Americans, particularly their collective insistence on survival and the creation of freer futures.” #SmithsonianWHM

Frederick McKinley Jones revolutionized the world—but how many Minnesotans know his name? A self-taught engineer and inventor, Jones transformed refrigeration technology, making it possible to safely transport perishable goods across the country. His innovations not only reshaped the food industry, but also played a critical role in medical supply preservation during World War II. Despite holding over 60 patents and being the first Black American inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, his legacy remains largely unsung in Minnesota. In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth we're spotlighting Gordon Parks and his profound connection to Rondo! At age sixteen, following his mother's passing, Parks moved from Kansas to Rondo to live with his sister. In his memoir, "A Choice of Weapons," Parks reflects on his experiences in Rondo, providing insight into the African American experience in Minnesota during the late 1920s. These early experiences in Rondo deeply influenced his perspective and artistic vision. In the late 1930s, Parks began his photography career in the Twin Cities, working as a staff photographer for local Black-owned newspapers and holding his first solo exhibition at the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center. Later on Parks' went on to work as a Photographer for Time Magazine. His work often reflected the struggles and resilience he witnessed in Rondo, shedding light on issues of poverty and racism. His legacy serves as a testament to the strength and spirit of the Rondo community. #RondoHistory #MNhistory #GordonParks
