#PayAttention. The nonprofit industry is not safe. It's time to mobilize against what some are calling the "Kill Nonprofits Bill." Congress needs to recognize our industry for the force that it is--12.8 million jobs or nearly 10% of private-sector employment in the nation. The Council is tracking a potentially harmful bill in Congress, H.R.9495. We expect H.R.9495 to get renewed attention in the House of Representatives this week. The bill as drafted includes language that creates redundancies and confusion while providing the executive branch with expansive new authority that could be abused. We, along with our partners at Independent Sector, National Council of Nonprofits, and United Philanthropy Forum, have issued a statement expressing our opposition to Section 4 of H.R.9495 and its predecessor, H.R.6408. ??Here’s what you can do: ?? A new report tracks the latest trends in donor-advised funds or DAFs. The headlines are: DAFs awarded $35 billion in grants last year. In general, grantmaking is down a little, contributions are down a lot, the number of DAF accounts rose, and the average balance in those funds is up. Most importantly, DAF critics may be disappointed to learn that the payout rate continues to be well above 20%--that's four times more than the payout rate required of private foundations. Election Day is finally here. If you haven't yet voted, please drop everything and head to the polls. If you've given to campaigns, if your brain is oversaturated with the policy and political consequences of the day, then remember this feeling tomorrow, next week, next month, in February, April, and June. When the campaigns eventually shut down, you can remain civically engaged. There are many nonprofits working year round to register voters, to shore up basic democracy principles, and get your town, city, state ready for the next election. These nonprofits could use your help. Remember them when you plan your annual giving.

This tagged post does a great job of showing the real impact on a foundation's total assets over time when it moves from the minimum payout rate of 5% to 7%. While you'll have more money to spend today, the total philanthropic value of the foundation diminishes significantly. So is it better to recognize the world is on fire and try to put it out now (in which case, you may want to spend down at a much higher rate)? Or, is it better to consider that some problems are intractable and help the social sector innovate to address them year over year? Who gets to tell our American story and what events should be included? The battle over the National Archives is a political one, and this is certainly the political season. This linked story notes that the agency's director is under fire for removing "prominent references to such landmark events as the government's displacement of indigenous tribes and the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. " The article says the move is designed to preemptively prevent Congress members, who control the purse strings of an agency facing a shortfall, from finding objectionable facts. https://lnkd.in/eiz5Qgxb
