The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) published an insightful article on how climate change affects human health: https://bit.ly/41ap650. According to the article, pregnant women, low-income individuals, and older adults are among the most at risk. The key factor in protecting these populations is a community’s ability to adapt to changing conditions. The article outlines several health problems caused by climate change. However, since we are engineers, we want to focus on solutions: ? Improving city planning: Designing cities to prevent floods, waterborne illnesses, and heatstroke. This includes creating parks throughout urban areas to help regulate temperature and developing a resilient water and wastewater system capable of handling extreme weather. ? Strengthening healthcare infrastructure: Ensuring hospitals and clinics are equipped to care for those affected by climate-related health issues. ? Developing urban food production: While challenging, reducing reliance on transportation for food supply can improve resilience. Many food shortages stem from damaged infrastructure caused by extreme weather events. ? Transitioning to clean energy: Reducing air pollution by shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources that do not produce CO2.
