Younger workers are often far more comfortable with messaging than voice calling. But is that always smart? Intuition among experienced professionals says that texts are often good but calls or meetings are often required. While a simple scheduling interaction with a business may be most easily accomplished in text, work involving stress or trust may benefit greatly from voice. Could there be real physical effects of voice conversations? Research suggests there is. A fascinating study led by Leslie Seltzer of the University of Wisconsin-Madison found measurable human hormone responses associated with managing stress are released by people after voice conversations, but not by people who were only texting. This suggests that hearing and speaking about important issues may be an important part of processing the strain in a way that messaging cannot provide. That’s 10 hours per month on average for every adult in the USA. But the technology industry enabling those phone calls is in flux!
