"SIAM event shows the fun side of Mathematics." - Dalton Sweat, San Marcos Daily Record. This past semester, our chapter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) at Texas State University hosted the inaugural Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival (JRMF) in San Marcos, Texas. We provided multiple math games like Skyscrapers, Cup Stacking, and Gerrymandering, as well as an assortment of exciting STEM clubs at Texas State, including the Math Club, Pi Mu Epsilon, SACNAS, and Bobcat Racing. Each club was staffed by volunteers from each student organization to help represent the diverse population at our university. They brought games and activities for all ages, with a fan favorite being the race car simulator provided by West Masone and Logan Mallow of the Racing club. JRMF at Texas State University took months of planning, with funding generously provided by Dr. Barrett Bryant, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, Texas State University, and Dr. Susan Morey, Chair of the TXST Math Department. The San Marcos Public Library provided the location for the event, as well as countless volunteers and marketing materials to support our event. We had volunteers from every corner of the university and city, with notable mentions being Mrs. Ashley Schimelman and Jennifer Jones-Kelley of the San Marcos Public Library, Drs. Alexander White, Cody Patterson, Timothy Chase, and Mrs. Ellen Couvillion from the Math Department, Michala Gradner, Eirian Whitson, Abdullah Kamal, Cameron Poole, Kristan Marku Beluso, and Ashok Paudel of our officer team, and all the other countless volunteers who made this event possible. An especially warm thank you to Dr. White for committing to supporting us for the full duration of the event, including setup and cleanup. Also, a special thank you to Mrs. Couvillion for providing food for all the volunteers out of the goodness of her heart. Aside from volunteering, we had immense support from faculty at the university in the preparations for the event, including Drs. Lucas Rusnak, Iván Ojeda-Ruiz, Ph.D., Hiroko Warshauer, Piyush Shroff, and last but not least Mrs. Joanna Gutt-Lehr. Countless faculty and staff showed support by attending our event, including but not limited to Drs. Connor Albach, Ray Treinen, Gregory Passty, Yong Yang, Max Warshauer, and David von Miller, director of the H-LSAMP at Texas State University Scholars Program. Not only was the event a success, with over 150 attendees of varying ages from as far away as San Antonio and Austin, but our team has been working with our department and college to ensure funding for similar events in future years. Spring 2025's event will be spearheaded by our two new directors, Michala Gradner and Eirian Whitson, who are also the returning President and Vice President of our university chapter. We cannot wait to see the magic they pull for next year's math festival! #txst #siamtxst #siam #jrmf #math #festival #fun #games #allages

Congratulations to our third graduating senior scholar, Cristina Cervantes, who graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science in Manufacturing Engineering with a Mechanical Systems concentration along with Applied Mathematics and Business minors. She made the Dean’s List every semester and received the competitive LBJ Outstanding Senior Award sponsored by the Texas State University Alumni Association and the Stelos Alliance. Cristina was an active member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the Society for Professional Hispanic Engineers (SHPE) student organizations at Texas State University. She provided STEM tutoring in the Collaborative Learning Center run by our organization and at the Math Cats Tutoring Center run by the TXST Math Department. Cristina completed two internships as an undergraduate with Mears Group, Inc. and with NXP Semiconductors. Her Senior Design Team won the prestigious Industry Award for best presentation during Senior Design Day at the Ingram School of Engineering. She has since accepted a full time Manufacturing Engineer position with NXP in Austin, TX. We are so proud of all the accomplishments Cristina has made and are excited for what the future holds! #txst #hlsamptxst #math #engineering #manufacturing #mechanical #business #nxp #mearsgroup #graduate2024

Congratulations to the senior officers on our team who graduated this past week, Cameron Poole, Abdullah Kamal, and Joel Pedroza! Holding the positions of Treasurer, Liaison, and Officer of Social Media respectively, these fantastic scholars helped found our organization just over a year ago. They helped grow our organization into the largest student-led mathematics organization in the TXST Math Department at Texas State University. It was an honor to have these amazing additions to our team and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors! #siam #siamtxst #officers #team #graduation #graduation2024

Four long years... countless classes... countless friends... I'm super excited to have graduated from Texas State University Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics! My journey at TXST has easily been the most exciting and fruitful part of my career thus far. From starting multiple student organizations to publishing two papers, I accomplished more than I ever set out to do, and I only plan to do more from here. I've learned so much from so many extraordinary people, especially the amazing faculty at the Texas State University Computer Science and TXST Math Departments. A huge thank you to my mentors, Drs. Cody Patterson, Iván Ojeda-Ruiz, Ted Lehr, and David von Miller, my friends from H-LSAMP at Texas State University for their unwavering support, and everyone else who has made a lasting impact on my career. I am excited to share what is next! #txst #txstnext #goodbyetxst #newbeginnings #graduated #graduate2024 #cs #math

This past Friday marked the culmination of an incredible journey as I attended the last H-LSAMP at Texas State University banquet before graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. My time in the program has been nothing short of amazing, filled with cherished memories and numerous achievements that wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support of so many incredible individuals. I am deeply grateful to my mentors, Drs. Ted Lehr, Iván Ojeda-Ruiz, and Cody Patterson, whose guidance have been invaluable throughout my academic journey. Their dedication to bringing the best out in me has truly made a lasting impact on me. I also want to extend my gratitude to David von Miller, the director of our program, whose leadership and vision have been instrumental in shaping my experience as one of his scholars. The H-LSAMP Scholars Program holds a special place in my heart as it has provided me with endless opportunities for growth in my fields of interest. Being selected as one of only 22 scholars from the College of Science and Engineering, Texas State University in 2021 was a tremendous honor, and being a returning scholar for three years has been a privilege. My experiences in the program, from attending conferences and invited talks to participating in book clubs and team-building activities, have been the highlight of my undergraduate career. The program's dedication to supporting high-achieving undergraduates like myself has been truly remarkable, and I am proud to have been a part of such a vibrant and supportive community. As I embark on the next chapter of my journey, I carry with me the lessons learned, friendships made, and memories created during my time in the H-LSAMP Scholars Program. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to applying the skills and knowledge gained to make a meaningful impact in my field. #lsamp #hlsamp #hlsamptxst #txst #txstnext #graduation #cs #appliedmathematics #scholarship #achievement #gratitude

Team Speaker Diarization, Michala Gradner, myself, and our advisor Dr. Iván Ojeda-Ruiz, struck again at the Texas State University Honors College Undergraduate Research Conference! Our team's research, titled: "Comparative Analysis of Speaker Diarization Techniques using Different Clustering Methods on CNN-Based Speaker Segmentation for Enhanced Precision and Recognition" got 2nd place at the poster session of the conference with nearly 100 competing research teams, making this the second award for our team in the past month. This award came with being recognized on the conference website as well as a scholarship for the team. This would not have been possible without my amazing team, as well as our fabulous judges, Kera Daughtery, Barbara Shen, and Costa D., who made presenting our research thoroughly enjoyable and helped score us high enough to receive this award. I would also like to express a special thanks to Dr. Barrett Bryant, the Dean of College of Science and Engineering, Texas State University, for inviting my team to present our research to the University Industry Board meeting this past week. It was an honor to meet many of the leading industry partners working to support Texas State and build its research presence. Lastly, I would like to personally thank the Director of the H-LSAMP at Texas State University Scholars Program, David von Miller, for his constant support of Michala and I throughout our research journey. He has been a driving force behind so many of our successes. I am really excited to see where our research goes. We have big plans for the future. #txst #txstnext #math #cosetxst #hlsamptxst #research #deeplearning #speakerdiarization #computerscience #award #presentation #thanks

Two weeks ago today, Abdullah Kamal and I presented our research titled "Comparative Analysis of Speaker Diarization Techniques using Different Clustering Methods on CNN-Based Speaker Segmentation for Enhanced Precision and Recognition" at the 2024 Texas State University STEM Conference. Not only did we receive participation awards for presenting, but we also received a first-place presentation award (alongside an additional two teams who tied for first place). It is always a joy to share our work with others and receive recognition for the work we love to do. Big thanks to our judges Dr. Tahir Ekin and Dr. Merritt Drewery who supported us in our successes. Huge, huge thanks to our mentor Dr. Iván Ojeda-Ruiz, Ph.D. with whom none of these successes would be on our radar if he didn't give us the opportunity to work with him. His belief in us and persistence with the project in the dullest moments makes all of these opportunities possible. Another massive thanks to all of our friends who took the opportunity to support us and hear about our research. All of the support we get throughout our academic journey is truly what allows us to succeed the ways we do. What an excellent day to be a bobcat! #txst #txstnext #poster #presentation #research #mentor #success #firstplace #stem #stemconference #eatemup #speakerdiarization
