You’ve started a new job. What are the first things you should do to get promoted?

Why am I worrying about getting promoted when I just started? How about concentrating on learning the job I have, understanding my new co-workers and our environment, and excelling with my team? I think that always thinking about moving up means that you are not concentrating on what is important in the here and now.

As a newcomer to the organization, prioritising a deep understanding of policies and ongoing projects is crucial. Identify seasoned professionals in your field in the organization who can potentially mentor you. Collaboration is key to making a positive impact. Set SMART goals and include self-development objectives to continually enhance your skills. This approach ensures not only professional achievement but also exponential personal growth.

You've just started a new job... so you have agreed to take on certain responsibilities. Focus your goals on: #1 learning the culture #2 getting clear on the expectations for you #3 finding out how to support others in your organization Do all of that to be your best. To deliver more value than you are getting paid for. Not because you want a promotion - but because you ARE that kind of person.

SMART goals are great, but they could be challenging to set if you're (very!) new at your job and you're still trying to assess how things are done, who the decision-makers are, and what your role entails. If that's the case, I strongly recommend: ?? Keep an ongoing daily and weekly list of all the tasks you've performed. ?? Make sure you're Manager is aware of all the tasks you're performing, including those invisible tasks that might fly under the radar. ?? Compare your current tasks and performance against the job description they used to hire you. How many tasks/responsibilities are you missing? How can you get those assigned to you? ?? Keep your Manager informed, always!

Seeking feedback helps you understand expectations, identify areas for improvement, and build stronger relationships with your team. Become an Expert in Your Role: Master your current responsibilities and become a go-to person for your area of expertise. Look for Additional Responsibilities: Once you've aced your core duties, be on the lookout for opportunities to take on additional responsibilities or volunteer for projects that demonstrate your initiative and ability to handle more complex tasks. Become a Team Player: Be someone who actively collaborates with colleagues, supports others and contributes to a positive work environment.

Feedback and feedforward are the breakfast of champions. Tools such as the GLA360 or the Johari Window will allow you to identify blindspots, and then develop an action plan to develop key skills to improve these areas. A leadership coach can accelerate your growth and help you achieve progress.

Visibility: By getting to know your colleagues and superiors, you make yourself more visible. They'll be more likely to remember you and your contributions when promotion opportunities arise. Understanding the landscape: Building relationships across departments helps you understand the bigger picture of how your role fits into the company's goals. This can make you a more valuable asset. Advocacy: Strong relationships can lead to strong advocates. When your colleagues and managers understand your skills and work ethic, they're more likely to recommend you for promotions.

Invest time and effort in building positive relationships with coworkers, managers, and key stakeholders across the organization. The quality of your life, and your career, is dependent on the quality of your relationships. That's why you have to be 100% authentic at all times. Authenticity requires courage (to be vulnerable), a willingness to accept failure and rejection as a normal part of growth and trust in yourself. You've got this, so just be you.

Do your current role very well. Truly listen to fellow employees and learn from them. Introduce yourself and be available to step up for any additional assignments you can contribute to.

It's like being in a glass room, being watched by all when you are in a new job! We can make it or break it! One should take it as the new launchpad. Invariably, we bring something new with us to the new organization. Those should be communicated at right forums and right occasions for people to see the newness one brings. It may need extra efforts to convince, as change can be resisted at any & every stage. Understanding this helps to navigate carefully yet decisively l.

But absolutely make sure that you have your core role completely down first, and can prove it. Otherwise it will have the opposite effect.

The very first thing one should do is to get the hands-on learning experience. Start learning with full passion and honesty. If the start is good and you are putting your heart in work, no one can stop you from growing faster than anyone.

New job? So before thinking if getting promoted, think about how would you adjust yourself to the new environment, new role, new team and a new manager...Unless you focus on that, it would be difficult to give your best. Promotion can be thought of little later... RS

People who are in a role that aligns with their passion and purpose don't suffer from imposter syndrome. So make sure your values and the company's are aligned. Wanting promotion is natural, but staying in the same role for a time can also allow for your natural abilities to shine through and allow line managers to recommend you for roles. So, in other words, don't rush it. There's a saying in Colombia: "si subes tan rapido como una palma, bajas tan rapido como un coco". This means that if you ascend too quickly, you may crash back down.

Be nice, keep your head down, listen more than you talk! Do what expected of you with the best of your ability. If you think something could be improved, give advice by showing examples etc don’t force people by shoving it down their throat. Come with hard facts. Let the argue over facts rather than just your humble opinion. Maybe this can get you a promotion. If not find another job.

Starting a new job involves understanding your value add in the organization and learning the tasks you're expected to perform. Your focus and priority should be on learning the expectations of your new role; thinking about getting promoted will distract you from that. It's great to be motivated, but don't let your ambition distract you from gaining the solid foundation you need to move upward in the organization.
