You've received a negative performance evaluation. How can you turn it into a positive?

First accept the feedback and retrospect the reason. This could be due to direct or indirect actions. If you realize there is any scope for improvement, act on it. Open mindedness, willing to learn and improve on the area of weakness are some of the ways to tackle it.

Accept the feedback. Have a dialogue with your supervisor to understand the gaps or perceived gaps. Learn from the feedback and together with your boss come up with SMART action plans to turn things around. On the other hand, do introspections too if this is the job and/or industry for you. If not, then look for other opportunities where you will be better appreciated. Strive always to bloom where we are planted.

Growth is the objective from negative (or really any) feedback. Evaluate the feedback, come up with a plan of action to improve, execute the plan. Simple advice, complex execution. Feedback can tell you that you didn't meet expectation, that the expectations your facing are skewed, or that expectations were not communicated well. After we had a plan set from a feedback session, keep it alive and monitor together the steps and progress. If both intervenients understand the road to success, together it will be easier to spot improvement changes or possible problems.

In my experience getting a negative performance evaluation is never wrong. In some people’s life it can be the booster. In my own experience, I have came across friends whom it became big booster that made them to realize they are in a wrong industry that not able to appreciate their talent. They started strategizing their career plan and moved to a different industry where the same effort was very much appreciated and graded as excellent. Talent can be graded differently in different industries. As such, always belief in your talent and efforts and next identify an employer who believes and appreciate it.

Indeed, it is important to step back and reflect on our achievements and the factors that have contributed to our success. This allows us to analyze more precisely what has worked and what has not. This analysis enables us to capitalize on our past experiences and learn from them to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

Think hard whether this is really the job for you. Ask for advice from an unbiased mentor. This may not be the right job or the right organization to work for. If the failure is coming from lack of enthusiasm, find your bliss elsewhere.

One should not consider negative feedback as setback for them. Instead those should be use to retrospect to gain insight on the things went wrong. Prepare plan to improve on those, have regular reviews of the plan of actions with leaders and seek their feedback. Additionally, choosing right mentor and taking their inputs would definitely help to overcome these situations in future.

It is important to bear in mine that the evaluation does not fully assess you but how well or bad you did. By taking the feedback in a positive manner, such as making it as your least favorable performance, think of it as something that you can always overcome.

After you request a copy of the performance evaluation, request to submit a statement in response. Then review the evaluation criticism to determine the root cause and a resolution to correct the condition if accurate or to document the reason you are unable to meet the standards required (Time, Training, Support, or higher priority taskings) and how you will remedy the condition. Then Submit the statement with your analysis and corrective action plan, requesting a follow-up performance evaluation in 30 days, and another in 90 days.
