You’ve just finished a video project. How can you tell if it’s really any good?

Evaluating your video project's success starts with understanding its goals and how well it resonated with your intended audience. Ask yourself if it achieved what you set out to do, whether that's informing, entertaining, or persuading your viewers. Feedback is gold, so don't shy away from asking your audience or peers for their honest opinions. Remember, a good video leaves a lasting impression and sparks the desired reaction or action from its viewers. Lastly, every project is a learning opportunity, so take note of what worked and what didn't for next time.

Defining "good" is critical here. Let's assume you're making a video to achieve a specific outcome (this should always be the case btw). A "good" video should help you achieve that outcome. A bad video will not. Regardless if you shot your video on an iPhone or paid a production company $100,000 to make you a video - a good video will get you results. This makes "good" subjective. But as long as you've outlined your KPIs, everyone should be on the same page.

If working on high volume project, a good idea is to schedual some criticising time, especially before sending your work to clients (or posting it if its for your personal projects)

When you've completed your video project its a great move to asking other people to view it before it goes public. A fresh pair of eyes can identify any editing mistakes, audio differences, and give you their perspective if the video engages with them. Think about it if you've spent hours, days or weeks looking at your own video project you WILL miss things. We are just human! SO... Get someone in your team, family, friends or people in your respective circle that you trust to give it their POV and insights before going live with your video projects.

After wrapping up a video project, gauging its quality can be a bit tricky, right? It's like cooking a meal, you know the ingredients, but you need someone else to taste it to truly judge its flavor. I think of it like advance screenings for feature-length movies. It can be nerve-wracking to share the finalized video with friends or colleagues, but it's all part of the process of making your work better. There will almost always be something you missed while editing that someone else could pick up on during their first watch. Since your final video will be watched by varying audiences, it's all the more important to get feedback from as many people as possible before it's released to the world.

Check your exported video on different devices. For example, if you’re editing the video on laptop, you have to check the sound quality on other devices. So make sure to check the exported version on mobile phone, tablets or even TV because people watch the videos on TV as well. Then about the quality of the videos - Mostly when you edit the video, you see the video in lower resolution to keep your computer from lagging. So make sure when you export the video, you watch the video on different devices again like mobile phone and even with high resolution screens, ultra HD and HD to make sure the quality of the video is up to the mark. When you’re doing these checks, write the errors down and edit them later :)

I document each project in Notion to accompany them with personal notes and thus keep track of successful ideas and note the areas I still need to work on.
