1 Track your results

One of the most important things you can do to prove your value is to track your results and quantify your impact. Whether it's the number of leads generated, the revenue generated, the feedback received, or the cost savings achieved, you need to have concrete data to back up your claims. Keep a record of your key performance indicators (KPIs) for each trade show and compare them to your goals and benchmarks. Use tools like spreadsheets, dashboards, or CRM software to organize and visualize your data. Share your results with your boss regularly and highlight your successes and challenges.

Before tracking your result, you need to understand what is your boss's KPI. If your work or achievement is irrelevant to your boss's or company KPI then it will not matter. Ask intelligent question to identify which part of your KPI or what work within your scope is influencing their KPI. Once you find out then put a quantifiable measure to that and start working toward that particular KPI. You don't highlight your success directly to your boss because that is "hard sell". Be humble and scheduled a periodic catch up like monthly, quarterly and so on. During the catch up, seek for feedback and ask for guidance for improvement which during this time you will need to show your result that your boss will recognize as success.

2 Communicate effectively

Another way to get your boss to notice you is to communicate effectively and frequently. Don't wait for your annual review or a formal meeting to update your boss on your progress and achievements. Instead, use various channels and formats to keep them informed and engaged. For example, you can send them a weekly email summary, a monthly report, or a quarterly presentation. You can also use phone calls, video calls, or instant messages to share quick updates, ask questions, or seek feedback. Be clear, concise, and professional in your communication and focus on the value you bring to the team and the company.

One of the things many are not doing proactively is to take up the ownership. If you want to move up, promoted, increased salary or bigger bonus then you need to start owning your work. Provide regular update to your boss instead of waiting for your boss to ask you for an update. Your update need to be "impactful" and not just checklist of what you have done. If possible your update should consist something that will make your boss or the department look good.

3 Seek feedback and improvement

Getting your boss to recognize your contributions is not only about showcasing your strengths, but also about acknowledging your weaknesses and seeking feedback and improvement. Show your boss that you're eager to learn, grow, and take on new challenges. Ask them for constructive criticism and advice on how to improve your performance and skills. Listen to their feedback and act on it. Seek opportunities to learn from others, such as mentors, peers, or experts. Enroll in relevant courses, webinars, or workshops to enhance your knowledge and credentials. Demonstrate your initiative and commitment to excellence.

I have already shared this in the earlier points. Not many bosses or managers out there know how to guide or coach their subordinate. Some might not even know how to provide feedback and you need to be able to lead the conversation if you want to take charge of your own career. Ask question that will lead to your boss giving out hint or tips on how you can shine in the company. Don't ask too obvious like "How can I improve?" or "What other ways that you would suggest me to do better in the future?". This is like you are just asking for straight answer without thinking. You need to relate your work to the company performance and then seek for clarification on your performance that influencing that outcome.

I really couldnt care about my boss reconising me. I rather work hard to build my future. What future? World is a many strange place to be in. Things happen out of a sudden. Always remember no matter how good a product is people still see the person first. So in reality biz is about the person. If you cant build your trust with your clients, no point of impressing your boss. Why? Boss evemtually will come to know that the client trust you more and may shift his loyalty to you should you go on your own. Therefore your boss will be on alert and appreciate you otherwise he loses a load of client to you. I can say this as this is all real life experience which I went thru .

4 Build relationships

Getting along well with your boss and your colleagues is also crucial for getting recognized and promoted. Build positive and respectful relationships with everyone you work with, from your direct manager to your team members, to your clients, to your vendors. Be supportive, collaborative, and helpful. Offer to help others with their tasks, share your insights and resources, and celebrate their achievements. Be polite, friendly, and courteous. Avoid gossip, conflict, and negativity. Network with people in your industry and beyond, and expand your circle of contacts and influence.

5 Ask for what you want

Finally, if you want to get your boss to recognize your contributions and reward you with a promotion, you need to ask for what you want. Don't assume that they will automatically notice your work and offer you a raise or a new role. Instead, be proactive and confident. Prepare a case for why you deserve a promotion, based on your results, skills, and potential. Schedule a meeting with your boss and present your case. Explain how you can add more value to the team and the company in a higher position. Negotiate your terms and expectations. Be respectful, realistic, and flexible.
