Make sure to look at a few job description that interest you to see key words that they use. Use them in your resume and give results. So if you organized birthday parties or events, quantify the efforts and relate it to the role you are applying for. The more you focus on the results the less a potential employer needs to guess your transferable skills and the ability to produce results. Companies need to know that hiring you will impact their bottom line and results in more profits or market share. The ONLY for them to fully understand your genius is to show them the end results that you produce.

I think the idea of tailoring your resume for each job is a myth that wastes a lot of time and energy as many job descriptions are generic and do not give proper information. Make sure to quantify your contributions and relate them to the role you are applying for by using key words found in various job descriptions. The more specific your results the better you look. I highly encourage a semi functional resume to highlight relevant information first as the reality is that employers spend 8 to 30 seconds reading your resume. So put all the relevant information first. It is the responsibility of the employer to read the resume in full. If you capture their attention with the correct information upfront that can eliminate concerns.

It is unbelievable how many people do not understand how to network and its importance in the work force. Networking is a great way to build relationships. Before you go to a networking event brand yourself with something distinct, my favorite color is purple so I always wear something purple, so when I follow up I remind them of the purple as it stands out. Secondly, have a purpose for conversations; DO NOT just go there to collect cards. Have conversations about them and their success to build rapport, do not go in with I need a job can I send you my resume as you have not earned the right. Show interest in someone who is successful and then transition into you wanting to work with them. Ask questions like what made you so successful.
