You’ve been laid off. How can you use this as an opportunity to change your career?

It's from my personal experience,I got retirement from one organisation, and my skills for that job is different than my educational qualification.However,I used to enjoy being with the students.I was not sure what to do after it.Then I thought to utilise my educational qualification and my research experience and applied to an University where my job is research and outreach prog.specifically on Women related issues which is my forte.So,it's about how we perceive ourselves whenever one is laid off,another opportunity pops up but one has to be passionate and intense in searching for a job which suits oneself.

I was in this position a little over a year. I took one day off to have a pity party and throw things while drinking wine out of the bottle in my pajamas. The next day I woke up at 9 am with a fresh new note book, opened up LinkedIn and posted that I was looking for a job. Next thing was network, network, network, network. You will hear no’s but it only takes one yes. (And) reach out to people who work in roles/jobs that actually interest you. Choose your everyday over an increase in pay. Just saying.

I got laid off… And I chose to use that time to start a masters program @MCST in medical cannabis at the University of Maryland school of pharmacy. A lot of our students are expecting to graduate and be offered careers in the industry… It’s just not where we’re at yet. So I took the extra effort to become the outreach Director for the medical cannabis student association and have worked to open up career opportunities for our graduates.

Having been made redundant around 12 months ago, I decided to give myself a year to explore and test ideas, including career change, supporting myself by working in bridging roles while I did. I was laid off during an economic crisis and new no job was forthcoming anytime soon. So I took my unemployment money, withdrew from my 401k took out some student loans, and went back to school. It's not always the most obvious starting point, but great teachers also tend to make great students and those are areas where you can build organizational expertise and trust from senior leadership in dog years.
