Flow chart designs exist to simplify information. That is the first rule. Now, one might be inclined to capture all the specifics of their design in a chart. But this might lead to an over-whelming amount information crammed up in one space. Therefore breaking up the data in sub-categories helps as such: 1. Smaller compartmentalisation of processes. 2. Easy to follow 3. Better outreach to individuals following the design for the first time.

When developing a flow chart for systems design, it would be very beneficial to use colors to add distinction between different components. For ex: FE vs BE; Service application vs Batch application; Existing components vs components that need to be built; Components owned by our team vs dependencies; Data consistency differences between different components, if that exists; etc. Similarly, shapes are essential not only to understand the different components, but also because they captivate the viewer and help retain information longer. If it comes to your style - do not reinvent the wheel. Stick to common or company standards and styles and really add only if necessary for the cause. Does it bring any benefit? Fine do it. If not - forget it! Keep it as simple as necessary to transport your message - everything else is over engineering!

Besides the many useful diagram layout tips... - do not assume that anything is obvious to the reader what is obvious to you - add additional textual notes if needed - do not write complex boolean expressions at decision points of high level diagrams - describe rather the purpose than the condition - if there are multiple players, use "swim lanes" per each - make it modular: group elements of a subgraph into a single element if there are too much elements (well, it depends... rule of thumb: ~20 per page) - if the tool allows, make clickable references to another diagrams (e. g. sub-graphs, alternative flows, etc.)
