You're working remotely and you want a raise. How do you make it happen?

It's very simple in sales; hit or exceed your target and your employer has no choice but to make you want to stay and that always comes down to money.

compile evidence of your contributions, achievements, and added value to the company since working remotely. this could include exceeding performance targets, taking on additional responsibilities, or contributing to key projects.

Deliver and communicate exceptional results continuously to key stakeholders and management. I understand the importance of humility, but make sure people understand your value to the organization loudly and clearly! You need to be able to promote yourself and be your biggest cheerleader internally. Otherwise, others won't be. If you deliver results and everyone knows it, I bet you're getting that promotion. You won't have to ask for it either.

Remove feelings and remember facts! "I feel I deserve this" or "I need this because..." or "the cost of living...." the most important thing with salary or bonus negotiation are facts. Facts about how you've met and superceded the job spec or set objectives. The best advice I've ever received and will continue to pass on is make notes and document your trials and tribulations. Having the courage is one thing but back it up with evidence

In my experience of over 19 years in Telecom and Power sector, I found people getting a Raise when the Employer needs them badly in near future. Thus what you did for the company matters less than what you are going to do.

Since a raise is about money, the timing has to also be related to money. Look at when the company will have an influx of income to ask, not when it is losing.

Great advice here. The other part is to make sure you read up on sales and negotiation skills. Ultimately you're selling yourself and your value. So learn that once you've made your pitch and made your ask (for a pay rise), say no more shut up, stop talking, wait. No matter the silence, the length, any awkwardness. Ask. Wait. Filling the silences and the gaps just allows the respondent to offer a nothing response. The power is in the preparation, pitch and ask. Practise it.

You need to measure and show everything you do. Almost like a sales pitch when you ask for a raise, thats why I always say no matter what you do, you need to learn some sales skills. Its a presentation that has the goal of you getting a raise, so you are basically you, the product, is worth x% more money. So list out all the benefits of having you, the product, in the company. And what a raise will do to improve you, the product's, performance. Such as higher moral, more inscentive, continue to go the extra-mile, long term goals with this company etc. It's a sales pitch!

Not my experience but I just read a post from another who was negotiating salary/raise. Worth sharing. They asked what range she was looking for and she said "Look just offer me something that's high enough that I'll feel like an asshole for countering it." She got 10K more than she would have asked for the 'old fashioned way'.

On the other hand if your exceeding your value and able to get a raise somewhere else happily then you need a follow up time-line so they choose to keep you or lose you because it's verified your overvalued and under paid

Physical Evidence The biggest mistake people make is they assume that leadership knows the number of hours put in and how hard they work. They don't! So, before ever asking for a raise, it would be wise to subtly and continually remind management what you are doing, and more importantly what you are accomplishing that aligns with your role and organizational goals. In short, the most highly compensated people are those that are responsible, visable, and go the extra mile. And this advice is ten times more important if you are a remote worker!

Old school teaches that if you hit the quota every month of the year you can get pay raise. At least I got my raise in such a way last January. Also, it's a good thing to ask the manager about it. When I asked he said " Hit the quota"

In my experience my goal to always add value to the company in every endeavor I undertake has served me that I have never had to ask for a raise. I make sure that my value to the project is properly noted, and the accolades, money, usually come as a result. It is not to say that it will always work that way but it does offer an alternative thought, demonstrate your worth, document and socialize your contributions to all who will listen (sprinkled in with those who can actually do something about it), and eventually, as a matter of course the rewards tend to follow.

Setting up a raise roadmap is essential for a career, and being placed in the right job for your market value. Always keep open communication and a schedule to get a raise. Keeping a roadmap and monthly benchmarks approved by leadership justifies getting consistent raises. Also knowing if there is a limitation or pay ceiling helps to decide other factors like staying or looking for another company.
