You're working remotely and need to make a good impression on your new boss. How can you make it happen?

By consistently demonstrating professionalism, reliability, and a proactive attitude, you can make a positive impression on your new boss while working remotely. Keep in mind that effective communication and a commitment to your work are key factors in building trust and credibility.

If it's remote then it starts with being AVAILABLE and REACHABLE to begin with ... Be it a boss or a new colleague, the best way to create a good impression is to come across as someone who genuinely cares and is helpfull as they definently need a lot of support while settling in ...I think that's all that is needed and the rest flows .

Scheduling a regular touch base with an appropriate frequency (e.g. weekly or bi-weekly) helps communicate effectively. This online meeting should be camera on to increase the level of "personal touch". Apart from the work, this touch base can share the things happened outside of work to build rapport in a different angle.

I had an opportunity to work remotely prior to pandemic and this was allowed because I was “visible”. Because of my timely and frequent communication the team and my boss knew I’m there and they can always count on my support. Over last 4 years, I have also learned that open and honest communication allows you build trust with your boss. Give them a heads up if you need to step away for few hours, be responsive, keep your boss updated and stay in regular contact . These seem like such basics but so many of us think we don’t want to bother our boss with such things and forget we are part of the team. Remember, make yourself “visible”.

Actually I want to challenge everyone's perception regarding "remote communication" that most probably assumes that their is a distance between sender and recier and I totally agree However I want to highlight three different types of distance involved in remote team communication: Physical distance :?represents the spatial distance separating team members (think communication in remote areas).? Operational / organizational distance : different departmental structures, employee skill levels, and know-how that can interfere with effective communication.? One simple question I like to ask a new manager is "What does good look like to you in this role?" I will then use that to guide the work I do and aim to do it better than what the manager is expecting. Regular check-ins will ensure that we are on the same page with regards to the quality being delivered and where needed bring in improvements necessary. This will go a long way in establishing your credentials as someone who can be relied on to deliver, and continue to learn in areas where you need to meet the expectations of your manager better.

Very simple. Everyone likes organized, responsive and proactive team members. Here are few things to do 1. Ask for expectations 2. Ask help for prioritizing 3. Make a weekly report 4. Setup a communication channel Repeat.

First of all, the idea of impressing is not what is coming to my mind at first with the arrival of a new boss. If you are in such approach, you take the risk not being completely yourself but more in an permanent assumption and adaptation mode to your new boss “potential” needs. So I would say #1 being totally yourself, #2 continue to provide a qualitative work, #3 Get an open communication with him/her to better understand his/her expectations in term of results expected #4 Provide & ask for feedback regularly.

Regular checkins and ask for feedback. It could be structured or informal but be proactive in suggesting it. I would also offer to connect in person even if it is only for coffee.

I asked a few people managers what team members can do to demonstrate they are indeed part of the team. One told me to “not become invisible”. This is such a powerful statement. When we work remotely our boss can’t see our efforts as easily as if we worked along side them. So my advice is to make extra effort to connect with your boss. Try adding a standing agenda item to regular meetings about getting to know each other. Consider asking one fun question at the onset of meetings.

Having worked remotely throughout the pandemic, I had faced similar dilemma on connecting with my manager. Few things that I did were: 1. Break the ice: By talking about mutual interest or things they do such as over the weekend, general interest like sports, hobbies, etc. 2. Be curious: Ask questions to know their work process so you can better understand them. It can be a good way to discuss about your own working style and how to collaborate together. 3. Be more open and visible: Since its remote, it is quite easy to hide behind communication tools and be impersonal. Its better to intentionally be involved so they start understanding who you are rather. Otherwise, you will keep being a small display picture behind the screen.

It can be very difficult for a 'boss' and or 'employer' to be able to share and be open about their personal life, likes, and interests, and show their real character. They will often need to inhabit a professional persona as the armour they need to wear to advance in their career. This can be hard to work with if you are part of their team as they may feel remote and/or unapproachable. This does not however mean that you and they cannot develop a rapport where all parties are friendly, interested and thoughtful towards one another in terms of behaviours, expectations and support. Be yourself and demonstrate your own openness, curiosity, and ability to show appropriate humour and goodwill. Most bosses are likely to respond positively.

I recently had a conversation with a Senior Director who feared speaking to her CEO. She feared running out of things to say on a personal level. I suggested to her to find out more about her CEO; interests and hobbies. With this information then to develop a series of interesting questions to ask (that she could keep in her back pocket to use if needed). Humans often like talking about themselves - and this is a way to build rapport by being curious about another person’s interests. Whatever their level in an organisation - CEO or not.

Don’t take problems to your boss, take potential solutions. Yes, ask for their views and express if you are a bit stuck, but also express what you are thinking as options forward. It shows a willingness to put your ideas out there.

1. Status report: let your manager know you are at e.g. 40% and explain what are the difficulties you are facing 2. Take input: while explaining above, try do something with the suggestions you get, but also give your opinion whilst not opposing the ones you get as a suggestion. 3. Deliver: deliver what you said you would, also provide concept versions + explain final version is coming in 2 days (of a document for example) this way you are giving your manager the chance to help you, which is one of the main tasks of a manager anyway. 4. Let others say something positive about you, especially main stakeholders or end customers, this shall not be artificial but accomplished by demonstrating some behaviour to that particular person.

Having regular check-ins with your boss is a great way to show you value their opinion and guidance. It allows for building a deeper understanding of the culture, processes, priorities, goals and vision not only of the team but also the company as a whole. But even more importantly it allows to correct course quickly in case your assumptions or ideas were wrong! This is a critical advantage that cannot be underestimated. When seeking guidance and mentoring though always be respectful of your bosses time. Book their time in advance, inform them where you need help and come prepared to make the most of the time they dedicate to you.

A lot of contributions are about impressing or seeking guidance from your boss, but it's important to seek and provide guidance to and from the team too. What are the rules on working remotely, which days, when and how do they need to be reachable? Also, different team members have different skills and can help leverage tools and functionalities to work more effectively, e.g., Excel, Teams, but also engagement/interaction tools, e.g., Menti.

Seeking guidance piggy backs off effective communication. Typically, organizations provide a communication method for remote employees. Use this channel to interact with your new boss. Listen actively because important details will be revealed during communicating that will help strengthen your relationship. Most leaders want to develop talent because it makes them look better. LOL, but it's true. Again, your understanding of any assigned task is crucial because it directly affects the quality of your work. Do not be shy or afraid to let your voice be heard. Share ideas you may have for process improvement because this shows your dedication to the team and success of the company.

When faced with a new boss, the best way to demonstrate proactivity and collaboration is to be curious and to check your assumptions. Ask about the new guy’s needs and expectations in relation to visions, work processes, collaboration, knowledge sharing and productivity measures. And check if the things you want to initiate are in line with his/her expectations.

The first (and most important) step towards being proactive is to define what ‘difference’ you will make to the organisation you’ve joined (I.e. your objectives and key results) and share, review and get comments from your boss. Don’t wait for someone else to set them for you. This will blow your boss’s socks off!

It’s important to pro-actively seek new challenges and projects, rather than waiting for them to be handed to you. If there’s something you’ve heard about within the business that interests you, offer to volunteer to be involved or shadow to increase your skills and experience. You could also ask if you could attend the office in person or arrange a social event (virtual or in person) to get to know more people.

This is of utmost importance - and the only way to get this right is to ‘study the menu’ - you MUST quickly become skilled with the product, what the company does, the process that it does, the product functions, and limitations, and when you ‘get this’ - bring your awesomeness - quickly - and make the client experience WOW!! This is being proactive.

Joining in on collaboration is really important when working remote. As CEO of a company with nearly 250 hybrid and remote staff, I spend a high amount of my time engaging and collaborating with teams virtually. I'm always impressed with those who join in on collaborative projects, but also who feel open to suggest ways to improve collaboration in a remote environment so that managers and supervisors know how to improve engagement.

Another example I have seen of effective collaboration when working on global project is maximising the time difference. Used smartly, it can make collaboration very effective. Be mindful of others' time zones and working hours/ style, are they an early bird or a night owl, and time sending them deliverables or documents for review based on that.

How you make a good impression on your new boss is the same, whether or not you work remotely. Your boss is likely to not have their nose in your work (if you're lucky) so you have to keep them updated with the cool things you're doing. While figuring out your boss, reach out before you're finished with a project to confirm you're on the right track. Or finish it early and allow time for feedback if you complete the whole project. It's also a great opportunity to collaborate with others to find out what he likes.

It’s also important to actively seek feedback. Don’t wait for your manager to give it if that’s not their tendency. That doesn’t remove the responsibility from them, but ultimately you own your career and don’t want your progress held back by a manager not regularly sharing feedback. Ask your manager directly what you could be doing differently and what aspects of your job you’re doing particularly well, etc.

A couple of learnings I’ve gathered over the past few years… 1) Be yourself and don’t overthink it! Your new boss hired you because they liked what they heard and saw in the interview… so (provided you were your authentic self at interview!!) don’t be tempted to change that or deviate away from the characteristics and behaviours that got you there! 2) Don’t be afraid to be clear with your new boss what you need from them to help you settle and bring your best self to the table. This shows that you know yourself, and you’ve thought about what you need to do to settle in and make an impression. New bosses want to see you succeed and they aren’t mind readers… help them to help you!

Remotely or otherwise ...and whether new or old boss..its always about adding value, creating impact, having Open communication , taking initiative without being asked to solve a problem and making your boss step up in front of his bosses is always a proven strategy ...

Have a plan! It's easy to be distracted when working remotely. While reprioritisation may be required as the day goes, start with what you want to achieve when you start the day!
