The Eisenhower matrix is most probably the best tool. Whether your are an IC or a leader, it is paramount that you understand it and have the discipline to put it into action. Steven Covey calls it quadrant II and what it means that you should identify the tasks that are important but not urgent; make time every week for those tasks and book slots in your calendar accordingly. The more tasks you progress in quadrant II the less fires you will have put out and eventually, the workload will become more sustainable.
