We have had many occasions when we needed audio editing services. We had to understand a few terms quickly to engage the appropriate technicians and tools. We saw that what we required were just basic edits such as removing noise, slightly enhancing the voice, placing strategic silence moments, adding background music based on the emotions needed, adding Foley effects, ducking the BG score and Foley to ensure that they don't overpower the voices etc. It helped when we spelt out these requirements to them. It also helps to let the performing team know where and how the sound files will be used. For example, an audio book will require a different treatment viz-a-viz an animated sequence.

Narrown down the direction will result in a better output. If you don't know the lingo and technicalities of audio design, as a good client, you can always play the "I have a reference card". Share with your audio designer /engineer examples similar of what do you expect for your project.

Aside from quality of asset sound design is one of the least thought of in pre-production contacts for some folk. The sound of your projects needs to be as much of an incorporated component as elements of your visual storytelling. This is not something that you leave to the end. This is something that you need to partner with experienced and trustworthy people for. It can turn your simple understandable visuals into a truly magical experience. Especially when not overpowered by scoring.

Many of the times, you are bring the client idea to life. So be sure to bring all these directions and decisions to the attention to the decision makers, and confirm that you are moving the audio team in the same general direction of the whole project.
