You're a web application developer. How can you ensure you're using the most important programming languages?

First we need to understand the purpose of application.If it needs to work on crossplatform we need to go for platform independent languages. we also need to check how popular the language is. we need to take budget friendly decisions like using open sources and also based on scale of the application . We also need think about compatability and interoperability of the language.

The importance of programming language is grossly overstated. I spent the better part of ten years working within an e-commerce platform consisting of a Perl backend and a Frankensteined PHP/Drupal frontend tied together with jQuery. None of it was the new hotness. None of it was the "right" tool. And some of it really sucked to work on. But it worked. It survived Rihanna lip stick launches without losing a sale and ELC made a gajillion dollars on that mess of a stack. Why? Because the devs building the damn thing were some of the most off-the-wall brilliant people I've ever worked with. So, yeah. I'll take a smart, seasoned dev with a dog-eared Cobol manual over some hyperactive rube shouting about the latest JS framework any day.

Understanding the purpose of the application, identifying the target audience, and outlining the features and functionality it will offer. Once the requirements are clear, the next steps typically involve creating a design or wireframe, choosing the appropriate technologies and frameworks, setting up the development environment for collaborative development.

While it's important to utilize the best technology for the problem, there are some scenarios where technology changes so quickly that picking the, "right," or, "best," technology may depend on opinion. In these cases I look to; how popular is a technology in the dev community, how easy will it be to find people to work on it, what companies back the technology or is there a strong open source community. In some cases it's best just to make a decision and move forward to avoid analysis paralysis. Other times it can be as simple as looking at your organization's infrastructure to help determine what your internal teams will be able to support best.

Knowing your goals is crucial for selecting the most important programming languages as a web application developer. Are you aiming for rapid prototyping? High performance? Cross-platform compatibility? By understanding your project's objectives, you can prioritize factors such as language popularity, community support, performance, and scalability accordingly. Whether it's building a scalable e-commerce platform or a sleek mobile application, aligning language choices with your goals ensures you leverage the right tools for the job, leading to successful outcomes.

There are really great copilot tools out there now to help get started, scaffold an application or even polish error handling, vulnerability or accessibility concerns. It's important to ask your copilot the right things so make sure you're learning how to engineer your AI prompts too!

Regardless of the programming languages you choose, it's essential to have a solid foundation in web development principles. Understand how web applications work, communicate with servers and databases, follow web standards, and ensure security and performance. Familiarize yourself with common tools and frameworks like HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, Node.js, Django, React.js, or Rails etc to streamline development processes effectively.

In a market where technology is constantly changing, understanding whether you are on the right path or not is a major challenge. Therefore, always be attentive to what the stack proposes, how its architecture is capable of performing in the best way for that situation. With this foundation in place, it is possible to perceive within the moment you are experiencing if the chosen language will serve the purpose.

When I think of the answer to this question it takes me back to the beginning when I hung out with experienced devs I made friendships with and asked them how to do things. They never told me but they taught me how to learn for myself by reading the docs, asking questions, helping others, and reading books. The #1 book suggestion was always The Pragmatic Programmer & I do still recommend that to anyone wanting to know more about programming. Software is all about being pragmatic and knowing the right tool for the job. Knowing the 'most important' isn't as important to me as knowing the best language for the job. It varies depending on the desired result. Just know 'most important' and 'best for this job' are often two different languages.

Something that's always trendy Is being able to implement design patterns. It will be a lot easier to understand the trends and implement the trends if you understand a common approach to implementing new tools and a vernacular that can shortcut a lot of explanation.

"Being aware of the trends" and "recklessly following trends" is a fine line. You're going to be busy enough working a full-time job, eating and sleeping. So don't worry about trying to do everything at once - it can quickly lead to burnout. Find a few resources/communities/thought leaders that help you grow, but don't force yourself to follow "big name" people/companies just because they are trendy. It might be a programmer who streams on twitch or a digital accessibility expert. Be open to organically discovering what helps you (not what helps other people).

A lot of programming is just doing it wrong a ton of times to figure out a better, faster way to do it. Implementing in different scenarios, with different requirements, and different teams will only help you get better.

The mantra "Build, Build, Build" is indispensable. Experimentation and practice stand as the cornerstones of acquiring a profound understanding of any language. This approach to being open is the best way to start. Stay relevant and ahead of the curve in the development community. Chances are someone else has thought of something better and the only way you'll figure that out is by being open to those new ideas and new technologies.

Before identifying your programming language goals, identify your personal goals and interests. Do you want a bunch of money so you can buy all the shiny things? Do you want to be able to retire comfortably with a pension and affordable medical care? Do you want to make the world a better place one day at a time? Do you want a reliable income in a low stress environment so that you can both be happy and support your family? Identify what you value and start moving towards it.

Speaking with recruiters and reviewing job postings in your desired field provides a real-world perspective on the technologies and languages that are in demand. This approach helps you identify which skills are most valued by employers and which programming languages are widely adopted across the industry. By aligning your learning and development efforts with these insights, you can focus on mastering languages that will not only enhance your employability but also ensure you are equipped to contribute effectively to current and future web development projects.

Always keep learning. Development in any language is about discipline. How much time you dedicate to the profession will also dictate how much growth you will have. Eventually you will peak (hard to do in programming) but it can and most likely will; eventually. Once you do, move on to the next goal or “popular” language. But dont stop there; while you work on your programming skills which at some point you will realize are very similar to your previous language; work on the backend architecture and such. It will get to the point in which you will feel that you are a true full stack developer, at which point you will understand as the saying goes that you understand nothing but know enough to do everything.
