You’re a vocal coach looking to expand your network. How can you build relationships with industry leaders?

My humble suggestion would be to to have a mindset in which you offer solutions to problems faced by people. Once this approach is applied and people start benefitting from you they automatically refer you to others. This helps grow your network, referrals and visibility. Being a vocal coach does not necessarily mean that solutions in your area of expertise only are offered. We all have our experiences and what we have learned from them can always be shared in the arenas of self development, leadership, motivation, life advices etc. A diversified network in my humble opinion is much more powerful. A mindset of giving before taking reigns supreme. This is purely my perspective, you can always disagree !!

Define Your Coaching Identity: Define your coaching principles and values. Identify your expertise and stay in your lane. Acknowledge your limits for quality over quantity. Cultivate Supportive Networks: Combat coaching isolation by building a supportive network. Receive encouragement during rough times and constructive criticism for growth. Authentic connection and leadership go hand in hand. By recognising your unique strengths, and serving others, you'll find your voice and naturally connect with leaders who resonate with your authentic approach.

It's always challenging to build professional networks as a freelancer/small business owner. My personal experience would be to start with free consultation workshops for whichever companies you're somehow connected to if you aim for corporate deals. Personal coaching will follow if they find your session valuable. Asking for a referral is also a good way to expand the network.

Identify what your objective is in reaching out to these industry professionals. What is your end goal? Do you want opportunities, do you want to learn from them, do you want to share your expertise, do you want to be more recognized for your expertise in your field? Understanding your end goals will help you know how best to approach them.

When reaching out to other experts and leaders of the industry you can let them know that you yourself want to learn more. You can network by telling what you do and how you could possibly co-work etc. Being a student yourself is a beautiful thing!

Post samples of your work that demonstrate your expertise. Anyone with even a slight interest in the field and a minimal amount of research can determine your proficiency. This will automatically garner recognition and establish valuable connections.

By far the most effective method to link up with the industry leader is to get involved in their work, whether as a participant of a workshop, especially smaller masterclasses and inner circle trainings or as a volunteer in their programs.

If you specialize in vocal pedagogy, classical voice instruction, voice training for speakers, or pop vocal coaching, it is crucial for you to understand the demand in your local area and tailor your marketing efforts to attract potential clients seeking that specific type of voice training. However, there's a catch - if you're well-versed in classical methodology and mechanics but lack knowledge in pop techniques, you may end up losing those students early on. To ensure success, focus on getting it right with just one student. If you can impress them, they can become your most powerful form of advertising.

Create Valuable Content: Start a blog or YouTube channel where you share valuable content related to vocal coaching. Industry leaders are more likely to notice you if you consistently provide useful information.

Provide Value: Offer your expertise to industry leaders in a way that benefits them. This could include providing insights on vocal health, contributing to articles, or assisting with vocal workshops they may be organizing.

Kommunikation mit KollegInnen ist erst dann interessant, wenn diese eine Win-Win-Einstellung haben. Manche schreiben leider pseudointeressierte In-Mail-Fragen oder gar direkt Kaltakquisemails. Solche Numbers-Game-Strategien sind für mich direkt eine Red Flag, genauso wie Menschen, die einen Beitrag mit dem offensichtlichen Hintergedanken kommentieren, sich als kompetentere Person zu generieren. Letzten Endes kommt es mir auf ehrliche, authentische Kommunikation an, die einen Gewinn für beide Seiten als Ziel einer m?glichen Zusammenarbeit im Blick hat. Wenn man die Person von Videos, etc. kennt und ihre Arbeit gut findet, ist es auch immer eine nette Geste, deren Kenntnisse zu best?tigen, um ins Gespr?ch zu kommen.

Once you know what your goal is, ie, what you would like to get from the connection, you can know how best to reach out. As a rule...always offer value first. This could be as simple as expressing interest and commenting on their social posts or presenting a value-based solution or opportunity. Remember don't make it about you and your needs, but demonstrate that the opportunity is valuable for them.

Seek Mentorship: Reach out to established vocal coaches or industry leaders for mentorship. Express genuine interest in learning from their experiences and seek advice on how to navigate the industry.

The artistic temperament thrives on acknowledgment, therefore, expressing sincere appreciation to a new acquaintance who holds a prominent position in the vocal coaching community and has graciously spared their time to meet with you, can be done by sending them a handwritten thank you card. In the card, highlight two or three aspects that truly impressed you about their work, studio, or any other noteworthy aspect. Conclude the message by expressing your desire to meet up again in the near future for a casual lunch or coffee, at their convenience. Maintain a friendly and approachable tone throughout the message.

It's easy to get and forget. Make sure you follow up with them afterwards, expressing interest in their achievements. This will nurture the connection and develop a lasting relationship which can continue to offer value for years to come.

As a vocal coach, your goal may be to expand one's client base in your area of interest or niche. Examples include choirs, soloists, churches etecetera. It would be important to identify the movers and shakers in the niche and to contact them. There are many ways to reach out. One can offer a short vocal class for the potential students they are in contact with or refer them to a website or YouTube channel with the aim of showcasing your portfolio, A vocal coach with great testimonials will likely have the road paved ahead. Therefore, it is important to have an established presence and student feedback to make contact easier.

Utilize LinkedIn: Connect with industry leaders on LinkedIn. Engage with their content, share your insights, and initiate conversations. Provide Value: Offer your expertise to industry leaders in a way that benefits them. This could include providing insights on vocal health, contributing to articles, or assisting with vocal workshops they may be organizing. Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on industry trends, news, and developments. Being knowledgeable about the current state of the industry can make you a valuable connection.

In my opinion the best way to build your career as a vocal coach is to start early while you’re still a Conservatory student: play as many auditions for the singers of your area as you can and get the companies of your city/country get to know you. Prepare as if it’s also an audition for you because it is, if you want them to consider you in the future.

Starting a podcast is a great way to connect with other industry professionals and establish lasting connections. When you sit down with someone to share their experiences for 30min - 1 hr, you demonstrate your value their expertise and what they can offer to your audience. You get to know them on a deeper level and that in turn develops a connection that will be available to you if and when you need their help and experience.
