Nobody who lasts in this industry ever really retires.. They may slow down, but never fully retire. Even if it means only taking jobs that suit them. Look at Sir David Attenborough, still going strong and it comes from a deep love for the work that we’re in.

Being a generalist can open up more doors, but having a niche in a certain genre can help make you "appear" to be the expert. I think it is more about adjusting how you have always done things, adjusting to new approaches. Film/TV production is a bit archaic in its process. Huge crews, long pre-production stages, bulky documents. We have young people entering the sector with new ideas, using AI to streamline pre-prod. We need to keep up and that is going to be key here.
