Before you ask for a raise or a better benefits package, you need to have a clear idea of your current situation. Research! Firstly, take stock of your skills, understand what you bring to the company and be confident about your contribution. We are all important in the grand scheme of quality! Second, what are other companies offering for similar roles? Read job specs and identify those that you feel match what you do and note the salary (and the difference between your current salary!) also find the average salary for your role in the area and compare to that too. Lastly, write down the reasons you feel you deserve that salary increase. What projects have you completed? How have you grown? All of these help to build your case!

2 Set your goals

Once you have a realistic picture of your situation, you need to decide what you want to achieve from the negotiation. What are your minimum and ideal expectations for your salary and benefits package? How flexible are you on each aspect of your compensation? What are your alternatives if your employer rejects or counters your proposal? You should also prioritize your goals according to their importance and feasibility. For example, you may be more willing to compromise on your salary if you can get more flexible work hours or more training opportunities.

First I would like to address the fact that I could not enter information in what else to consider! When assessing your position within an organization, you need to consider exploring other opportunities outside your company. That’s because most employees receive raises that barely keep pace with inflation. Whereas, jumping to another company offers the chance of obtaining a larger starting salary. Becoming a consultant sometimes allows a skilled worker to nearly double their salary, but comes with uncertainties. This is because of the 6-18 month long contracts.

After you set your goals, you need to prepare your case for why you deserve a better salary and benefits package. You should focus on the value you provide to your employer, not on your personal needs or wants. You should also use concrete data and examples to support your claims, such as metrics, testimonials, or awards.
