Communication with colleagues as it relates to your job responsibilities and project-specific work is important, but establishing a rapport and getting to know them as people to build the relationship makes a world of difference when collaborating across offices, time zones, etc. One way I used to do that was by setting up a 30-minute virtual coffee chat where we'd talk about work-related items, but also get to know each other by talking about interests and hobbies outside of work, family, etc.

Simple things matter, Birthdays, local or cultural holidays for an Indian in the US, Happy Holi, may be as important than Thanksgiving or 4th of July. Try to get the person. What do they like? What are their hobby's? Are they married and have kids? What are their names? Connection at work happens through the human aspects, not so much the professional, which creates more appreciation for the rational support.

If you can, do an effort of speaking their langauge, even with mistakes. Even if it is only "hello, how are you today". Good intentions build bridges. It builds rapport and goodwill.
