You're torn between conflicting resume advice. Whose suggestions should you follow?

Would you take advice from your mechanic about a plumbing issue, or seek counsel from your stylist on roofing issues? Of course not. You want someone with RECRUITING/HIRING experience who has USED AN ATS on the hiring side. There are SO MANY resume writers that - whether from ignorance or deliberate misinformation - are using things that just don't exist to drum up your business. -There is NO WAY "around", "through" or "past" the ATS - and you wouldn't WANT it - it is where offer letters are generated! -AI "bots" are NOT autorejecting your resume - it's illegal. -"Shoot your shot" is bad advice in this market - you need to be qualified. -"80% of jobs" are NOT "hidden". Again, some of that is LEGAL. Don't be swayed by follower count.

Unfortunately resume is a necessary evil, at least today! Hope we will change that in the future. As we all know the ATS can be challenging, and even passing that, you are screened again by the recruiter. Every recruiter has a different perspective on a resume. On the contrary, as the industry says, I take more than 6 seconds to review a resume. I think the candidate deserves that. My tips: maximum of 2 pages, concise, to the point, showcase your expertise, full of quantifiable data, and accomplishments. Now you have my full attention!

I recommend this: If you are an executive be advised that everyone is an "executive resume writer". From those who last recruited lab techs 15 years ago to those who were salespeople for staffing services to those who once found a job as an executive. And, you will most frequently see these people in your feed, because executive resume writing is incredibly lucrative. These are not people who have the depth of experience to write an executive resume. A true executive recruiter has 5 or more recent years focused exclusively on executive recruiting. Applicants who don't tailor can fall prey to the dreaded ATS monster. The ATS is looking for key words related to the job posting. Tailoring builds those words into your resume so that you're more likely for your resume to land with the hiring manager.

If someone says flair is a good thing, they aren't focused on the right things. No one is going to tell you "Well Julie, we were going to give you the job, but Martha over here has 6 fonts and three colors. She's a better fit." Focus on choosing a provider who is focused on creating the right content and context for you.

The most common example I see of applicants following resume trends and positioning themselves at a disadvantage is listing out too many skills or any and every skill or technology they can think of. The purpose of which is to get through the ATS. It makes you appear as a candidate unfocused, generic and ultimately dilutes the experience you really do have. Instead, have your main resume with specific outcomes and accomplishments while incorporating and emphasizing any must have skills you have that were listed in the job description.

If you are around long enough you will see advice that is on both sides of the spectrum. There is no silver bullet when it comes to resume structure or length, etc. Trust what your gut says but also look at the responses that you are getting. If they are low it could be how your resume is structured or perhaps the resume has nothing to do with it. If you are truly passionate about a role do some digging and network to find who owns the posting and connect.

I understand sometimes your heart say something and mind something else so you are torn between advise and your gut. In that situation, just few basic things to review when you are done writing resume: 1. Does the resume format looks professional? is it empty or cluttered? is it covering right main heads? 2. Run thorough check for spelling, grammer, punctuations 3. Is your education and experience relevant to the job applying for? 4. Are key words from job post addressed in your resume

Something to keep in mind, resumes do not need to be one page. That is a “rule” that fizzled a long time ago. On the other hand, unless you have the experience, details, metrics, accomplishments to back it up, your resume should be 6,8,10 pages either! Including projects or initiatives you personally contributed to and impacted it critical. Highlighting accomplishments allows you to draw the reader into to experience you are most proud of and usually aligns with the direction you want to take your career. Avoid generic language like “we executed” or “part of a team that”. Be specific!

Above all else, your resume needs to contain your accomplishments. It doesn't matter if it's functional or chronological or pretty or black-and-white. If it doesn't contain your accomplishments, spelled out with your applied initiative and results and topped with great metrics, it's not doing you justice.
