You're teaching an online Higher Education course. What tools do you need to manage your classroom?

In my experience I have found that integrating theory, practical application followed by problem solving has been very successful in my online classes.

If you’re creative enough you actually don't need any “tools” at all. You simply make use of a progressive pedagogical approach such as heutagogy, a good sense of humor, problem-based learning (PBL), and excellent communication skills. Boring students with presentation based monologues or by forcing them to experience online the recreation of the same traditional classroom environment and modus operandi is utterly pointless.

One of the greatest challenges of online teaching is learner engagement. Most of the times, online teaching tends to be a one way communication, as a result the learners remain disengaged. I have needed very little to deliver content during virtual, higher ed instruction. Know your material, deliver it in an enthusiastic manner, interject anecdotes and personal experiences. Eu uso duas ferramentas para dar aulas virtuais: o Zoom e o Teams. As vantagens e desvatagens de cada um: - O Zoom é muito rápido e tem um layout muito fácil de manejar, também tem as pequenas salas dentro da reuni?o, onde podemos colocar pequenos grupos para trabalhar de forma independente. Como no Zoom n?o tem um lugar para armazenar os materiais das aulas, eu uso o Google Classroom para isso, a fim de disponibilizar os materiais para os alunos. - O Teams tem local para armazenar material e deixar que todos os que est?o inscritos tenham acesso. Um ponto negativo é que é um pouco pesado, exige um computador minimamente novo para rodar o programa.

Ferramentas como Kahoot, Wordwall, Genial.ly e outras tornam o ambiente virtual de estudo muito mais interessante. Todas as ferramentas ditas cima s?o páginas onde podemos criar jogos online para avaliar o aluno de uma florma mais interativa. O Kahoot, por exemplo, é uma página para criar jogos competitivos, já que cada aluno joga de maneira individual em seu telefone, e a pontua??o depende da rapidez e resposta correta, estimulando os alunos a competirem e a serem melhor cada vez mais nas avalia??es. Uma outra ferramenta que também podemos usar para avaliar é o Google Forms.

Las herramientas de detección de similitudes, no siempre tienen que ser plagio, creo que ahora son más necesarias que nunca, sobre todo que estén optimizadas para el reconocimiento de uso de IA generativa en la creación de trabajos prácticos.

In our online courses, we rely on Turnitin as our plagiarism detection tool. If a submission report surpasses the 25% threshold, it is flagged for potential plagiarism, and the same standard applies to AI-generated reports. It is imperative for students to verify that their submissions align with the permissible range indicated by the green light. Any report exceeding 25%, marked in yellow or red, will not be accepted.

By having more tools for plagiarism to check for viability more than ever with AI there is more chance to corroborate when plagiarism occurs. This will challenge people to push the envelope and think outside the box.

AI has made huge advances in feedback tools. Iterative assessments provide instant AI generated individualised and personalised feedback which can, if programmed well, build assessments instantly to deepen challenge and knolwedge and advance learning significantly.

Feedback is key. Knowing how your target audience changes after an educational initiative is key to measure effectiveness, understand impact, clarify opportunities to further improve your learning design and execution. Surveys are a nice way to collect first hand feedback and sentiments, especially if you can count on AI to analyze and summarize the results. If you want to go beyond that, there are advanced, industry specific tools that aim at just that: leverage training data and course evaluations to measure training quality, effectiveness, impact and ROI. Talk to your LMS vendor and ask for advanced Learning Analytics or Learning Impact analysis.

I ha e personally used google form. They are great and easy method to acquire feedback. I would strongly suggest the use of such softwares which is super easy and efficient.

Tools which facilitate, drive and energise peer-to-peer interaction (asynchronously) such as a Discussion Board/Forum are also very valuable. In my experience (as lecturer and Educational Designer) these are most effective when integrated into an assessment task which incorporates some sort of personal interest/experience/insight linked to the content/theory covered in the course/subject.

Es importante que en cada curso en el que se use la videoconferencia como modalidad tenga un Prontuario bien elaborado de los contenidos en orden secuencial, y que este se convierta en contrato entre los alumnos, el Profesor y la Institución que endosa el curso. Por otro lado, las normas de funcionamiento en dichos cursos deben ser claras y dinámicas, que haga de esta aula virtual sincrónica una formal y estimulante. Es de vital importancia el establecimiento de normas específicas que incluya la asistencia, participación y la forma de evaluación dentro del Prontuario, y esta información debe ser reforzada en cada sesión académica.

Perusall has been a game-changer. It helps me to keep track of how students cover material and students like to discuss readings on the platform. I've also used it for peer-reviews and it has worked quite well. I'm discovering new ways to use it every semester as I'm not afraid to experiment creatively.
