Engagement is vital to success in planning projects but it's important to always speak with your audiences and not at them. It is also worth while realizing that you represent change in the eyes of those with whom you are interacting which means there is likely skepticism, concern and maye be even fear. This means it's wise to not only speak in straightforward words but also to be very open and patient in responding to pushback and questions to demonstrate you genuinely care about what they are saying.

People have the right to participate in the decision making processes regarding the territories they live in. Urban planners must be stewards of this right. Many communities - specially the socially vulnerable ones - have a estranged historic with participatory processes. Then, it is our democratic duty to make sure that anyone interested in participating can take their place. We also must empower them to do so in a qualified manner, by facilitating their access to information about what is going on in their territories.

This is so important! A just urban planning process is one in which everyone interested in being a part of the decision-making can do so. Most of the time, urban planners intervene in territories in which they don't belong to. Thus, getting the community properly engaged in the debates can be tricky. Empowering locals is a effective strategy to foster the democratic right to participation of the community and also a good strategy to gather inputs for the project.

Aclarar que si una intervención es por recurso público esto sigue un esquema con un nivel de complejidad que se tiene que respetar, caso estudio actual, en alguna ciudad del norte de México, un proyecto de peatonalización y semi-peatonalización esta en riesgo por el tema del rechazo de la comunidad local, existen defensores pero también detractores radicales, con la firme justificación de la perdida de estacionamientos, mismos que son usados por ellos y no por los posibles "clientes" que se temen perder de concretarse la intervención, de los problemas mas grandes en la Admon. Pública es la gestión, programación de gasto en obra pública que normalente es realizada de manera inercial y no desarrollada, un balance que es tema de estudio.
