Good leadership is taking on responsibility and serving others and the organization. If you want to demonstrate your leadership skills the best way to do so is to put them to work by serving your current leader and team using them. In my own experience I have had team members who have taken this approach. On one specific team I had one team member who was very convinced of his leadership skills who was very vocal about them and regularly touted himself. He mainly just voiced opinions. I had another team member who quietly and humbly put his leadership skills to work on behalf of the team. When there were responsibilities to be taken on, he was quick to jump in. When someone needed help, he was there to assist. Who showed leadership?

6 Keep learning

The sixth and final step to demonstrate your leadership skills is to keep learning and growing as a professional and as a person. This means that you should remain curious and open to new ideas, as well as seek feedback and opportunities to improve. You can do this by reading books, articles, blogs, podcasts, and other relevant materials. Additionally, take online courses, webinars, workshops, and other activities that enhance your skills and knowledge. Joining professional associations, communities, forums, etc. can connect you with other experts and peers. Attending conferences, events, seminars, etc. can expose you to new trends and best practices. Also consider reflecting on your strengths and weaknesses in order to create a personal development plan. Finally, seek coaching or mentoring from someone who can guide you and challenge you.

In theory everything that has been stated (steps 1-7) is correct. But, I am a strong believer of Murphy law —and that law ensures the separation of theory from practice. In practice seldom are bosses enlightened. Showing leadership to these types is surely a death nail. Of course, unless you are talented in the art of politics. I would recommend a strategy that is based on understanding your environment —is the boss enlightened ? If yes, then prepare to show leadership qualities and if not, move with caution and patience. Be more of a listener than a “doer”.
