I start to play other games, watch gameplay of other games both old and new, anything to look and see what others are doing or have done in the past. Not actively searching for anything but rather just taking things in and seeing if anything stands out or something comes to mind. Sometimes that break and distraction is all that's needed to come back the next day and have a solution. Forcing a result here and now doesn't always produce something good.

Creative ruts can be tough! I find that stepping away and gaining inspiration from completely different fields—like art or even nature—helps spark new ideas. Collaborating with others or seeking feedback can also provide fresh perspectives. Sometimes, embracing the rut itself and letting ideas percolate without pressure works wonders! How do you balance creative freedom and structured design in these moments?

I’d step back and take a break to clear my mind. Sometimes, disconnecting from the problem helps. Then, I might seek inspiration from other games, movies, or even unrelated fields like art or music. Talking to team members or other creatives can also spark new ideas or offer a fresh perspective. I’d try experimenting with new mechanics or revisiting earlier, discarded ideas. Most importantly, focusing on the player experience and revisiting why I’m passionate about the project can reignite that motivation.

One should not be so quick to jump to seeking inspiration from other games. The main issue I've always had with motivation was measuring my own success by another's ruler. In this state, playing games can add to my insecurities and frustration more than inspire. You end up seeing only what your project lacks, not what you've accomplished. This leads to mentally adding to an endless list of mechanics and features that only bring you further from the game you originally wanted to make, and closer to a product you feel nothing for and will likely never complete.
