When we struggle with our positions it's often a sign that we need to step back and reassess. Talk to peers in similar roles. Meet with people in other industries. Talk to folks in other positions. Read. Attend conferences. Never assume that we're in the "right" job or even field so take a breath and look beyond the horizon. Then, if your passion for product marketing rekindles, invest in a new skill. If your analytic by predisposition, learn about writing or presenting. If your skills are written or oral, take a course in Excel, R, or Python. You might find that you want to attempt what you've learned within your current field and that process of growth will be all the re-ignition that you need.

Before you start, have clear goals that are measurable, time-bound, achievable, and relevant. Break them into milestones to achieve with time lines. Often marketers are too close to their product and get tunnel vision. I find the best things to do are to explore/understand: - Your consumer: What challenges are they facing? Watch them use your product or competitive products. Are they modifying usage to get it to better work for them? What do the negative reviews say for you and your competition? - Other categories: What types of products/solutions are touting a similar benefit? How are they approaching it via integrated marketing tactics? - Complementary products: What is consumed along side your product line? Is there an adjacent need that you can fill? In the end, it’s all about looking externally and getting a better understanding of your consumer need.

That amount of time is different for everyone but that lack of motivation feeling that kicks in is the same. Doing more things that give you joy within a role is a good way to keep your productivity and spirits up. This could include going to your manager and asking for more tasks that are in the focus area that you enjoy or even seeking out other org leaders to do work for them if there is alignment.

Burnout's a creativity killer, I get it. Rekindle the flame. Reflect on what drew you to this role in the first place. Was it the thrill of launching something new? Maybe the challenge of understanding customer needs? Reconnect with that passion and use it to create fresh ideas. Also, try to reframe your routine. Look for inspiration outside marketing circles. Take a painting course to spark visual storytelling. New hobbies can reignite your passion and bring new perspectives to your product marketing strategies.
