Listen to your gut there - they should offer a no-obligation discovery call so you can assess this. - Are they certified? This one can be a little controversial as you don’t need a qualification to be a coach. But in my view, it’s essential for a coach to have the right qualifications & accreditation in coaching itself (e.g. ICF accredited course) so you can be sure they know what they’re doing - Do they invest in themselves? Regular CPD? Regular supervision? Great coaches have supervision to keep them accountable to the correct standards

Are you ready to hear some truths to see if you are prepared for executive coaching? I have been doing this for 20 years and the #1 thing I dive in with all my clients is deciding what is truly important. We find that in a very round about way and find a lot of things along the way. I love asking certain questions, and they always are met with silence and "I'm not sure." In reality that question will open them up about 30 seconds later and we go down so amazing rabbit holes to learn a BUNCH. It's eye opening, usually for both of us. Be ready to adjust the plan always. Things change, evolve, and you never know when certain opportunities will arise. As a senior leader, you MUST be ready to take action.

If you use the Egan model it is based on moving from one state to another and so it both demands a plan and a “future state.” So, describe where you are at the moment, test it out get to the reality of where the individual is. Now how would you like it to be. That means you outline clearly the future, ideal state, describe it, what does it look like, and why is that important? Them thirdly what is preventing you from getting there. This means identifying the blockers and then a plan to overcome them. Quite a simple model but one which is really useful in preventing coaching that goes off at tangents and also we know when it’s done!!

Coaching is not an avenue for obtaining advice, mentoring, training, consulting, therapy or counselling. Coaching is focused on the future & on supporting the coachee to generate solutions. It's a process where the coachee identifies the most appropriate outcome through powerful questioning techniques. Therapy, on the other hand, looks at the past & analysis of problems. Counselling typically examines the psychological well-being of a person. Mentoring generally involves a subject matter expert imparting specific knowledge & experience. Training is used to transfer skills & knowledge on a particular topic or process, and the trainer is considered the expert. Consultants are experts employed to diagnose problems and recommend solutions.

Then, you’ll create a plan that feels aligned and motivating and she’ll keep you accountable. Insight first, then strategy. That’s how a coach will help you achieve your goals!
