You're struggling with remote team communication styles. How can you foster better collaboration?

One thing I’ve found extremely helpful is to level the playing field by having everyone attend the meeting in the same format, i.e. don’t have a room with 10 people in it and 3 or 4 others on screen. I once switched the meeting set-up on a struggling programme so that everyone, including the Global Head, was sat at their desk to attend the meeting. This meant that everyone was the same ‘size’ on the meeting screen and therefore created a more conducive forum for discussion.

I’ve worked with remote teams & global teams and not found this difficult if you are considerate & think wider than yourself & your own perspective Ultimately it’s about thinking of others Ask them what works best for them : -what format of communication -how often -what time of day -any days if the week to avoid Then combine this with the needs of things that have to be met, you meet in the middle Remote contact just requires more thought as the medium isn’t in person So notice things more like -mood -check they’re ok -do they need more support -do they feel involved -do they know they can reach out whenever -do they feel as valued When you care about your people, this becomes a lot easier Because you want the best for all

As Dale Carnegie said, "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than in two years by trying to get others interested in you." Prioritize connection to foster a thriving remote environment.

What is the nature of your struggle? People don't like each other? People don't know their roles? People avoiding work? Each of these struggles has a different remedy.

From the get go, set clear expectations and guidelines for communication and collaboration. Define response times, working hours, and availability so that everyone knows when they can reach each other. This is one way to avoid misunderstandings. Also, regularly update these guidelines as your team evolves to maintain smooth operations.

When Set Norms are established ,its only how we use this tool to guide them. Its very important to have 5-10 mins tool box meeting, identify those one who can grasp the communication much faster, outline key areas so they can disseminate the same information across.

S'appuyer sur des éléments forts est un atout. Il permet la distribution de la parole. Personnellement la base commune c'est la trame de réunion, préparée à l'avance ainsi que les intervants.

Often I find it helpful to create social “segments” with remote team members. Making the work meaningful and fun. Get people to want to show up ON CAMERA and make it fun: Theme the days just like if they were in a cubicle. 1: Bring your pet to work day (show and tell) 2: Hawaiian Shirt Day 3: Play a virtual game to inspire momentum and build teamwork 4: Start a “Toastmasters” type club to help your team become better communicators together. Give away a virtual traveling trophy or have something made that you can send them to celebrate and show others when they are on camera. The idea with any group is create safe spaces where people can build trust and foster authenticity. It’s your responsibility as the leader to lead well.

Implement project management & collaboration tools like Google Workspace & ... .These tools help keep everyone engaged and on the same page also make it easier to track progress and share information.

It's important for remote teams to spend time together without just talking about work. Having regular chats, like a virtual coffee break, where you talk about anything helps people bond. It might be hard to start, but it's fun and really brings the team closer once it becomes a habit.

Having a global team means having cultural differences, which may include whether and how to speak up. I encourage engagement by having team meetings and taking 10 minutes to answer a work-environment friendly ice breaker question. Favorite hobbies/activities outside work, favorite holiday (this helps with diversity on a global team) and even talking about pets, if they have them or why they don't have one, are all topics that help teams get to know and appreciate one another. Once they feel more connected as people, the engagement with each other increases. There are tons of professional ice breaker questions on line so it's super easy to find them.

Encourage team members to share interesting or fun photos related to their work-from-home setup, hobbies, or pets. Create a friendly competition and vote for the best photo.

Creating a ‘family’ with your team is key here. Everyone hears and vocalizes differently so create an atmosphere that fosters a safe zone. The best way to do that is to ensure there are as many opportunities as possible for the team to share personal stories and gatherings (virtual or in person) that are not work related. If you can, encouraging group activities helps build a strong foundation for the team.

à ce niveau il serait important de mettre à disposition de l’équipe une fiche de recueil des avis sur l’utilisation des outils de communication. Les membres pourront renseigner au quotidien ce qui fonctionne et ne fonctionne pas afin de ne rien oublier.

Take the time to walk away, read the message over at various times so you get different perspectives before touching the keyboard 4. Pick up the phone to get clarity. Never assume. 5. If you draft a response, ensure there's no one in the to, cc and bcc fields just in case you press send abruptly. You can save yourself embarrassment and damage control. 6. Talk to yourself if you feel triggered by the message. You will realize you're not a target or victim so respond and act accordingly. 7. Be patient. No one likes being misunderstood, misinterpreted, judged and/or labeled.

What I've found to be more helpful is to establish each person's preferences and use that for communication because different people yield different results based on their reception and interpretation of information, especially through certain or different communication styles/methods. What is important is the outcome.
