"Self documenting code" is an important trait of maintainable code in general but I would go further to say that Its a necessity when building an API since the whole purpose is to have an outlet to the complexity of your product to program against. A few of things to keep in mind when documenting your API: 1. Well typed code is 90% of the way to be called self documented. (and about 50% tested!) 2. Its always worth it to spend extra time to think of the right name. I actually encourage to include renaming within the scope of refactors that you do. 3. Business needs change all the time. at times the need is for faster deliverables, other times, its higher quality and fidelity, document your code to be able to make that switch.
