The biggest obstacle to effective communication is the lack of active listening. To embody servant leadership and improve communication, I employ several techniques: 1. Neutralize Our Minds: I strive to set aside all preconceived notions and biases, engaging with my team to listen actively to their ideas and concerns. 2. Stand in Their Shoes: After listening attentively, I ensure not to respond until I fully understand the rationale behind their perspectives. 3. Touch Their Feelings: I engage with and empower my team in a manner that resonates with their unique dynamics. Recognizing that not all teams are the same, I avoid making assumptions about them.

As a military veteran, retired leader in law enforcement communication skills were essential. We often talk about active listening and having an open-door policy or creating a forum or suggestion process to promote open conversation. But the simple issue is putting it all into practice. Three quick points for consideration. 1. A point I share in trainings and speaking engagements is get out of your chair and go talk with staff at their workstation or location. 2. Invite them to sit down over a cup of coffee, take the time to research topics of their interest. 3. Bring them into the office and have them sit in your chair to discuss ideas. Actions will carry you farther than just having a written plan on communication.

Listen, listen, LISTEN! Active listening is a key to servant leadership. Without it, without truly listening and resisting the urge to interrupt, a leader is unable to understand the needs of those you are entrusted to lead. If we do not understand these needs or goals, we are unable to best create an environment that supports those legitimate needs and goals.

As a leader, sharing a vision isn't just about articulating goals; it's about inspiring others to join in a collective journey towards a common purpose, in the interest of all involved. It involves painting a vivid picture of what success looks like and why it matters, igniting passion and commitment within the team. By fostering a sense of shared purpose and aligning individual efforts with overarching objectives, leaders can galvanize their teams to overcome challenges, innovate, and achieve extraordinary results. Effective vision-sharing isn't just a communication strategy; it's the cornerstone of true leadership that empowers individuals to see beyond the present and strive for that little extra which makes it EXTRAordinary.

Effective communication can be a challenging task for many leaders, who may be inclined to offer immediate solutions without fully considering the situation at hand. However, when leaders communicate with the goal of empowering their team, they enable greater growth and development. This can be achieved through providing essential support and asking pertinent questions to prevent potential missteps that have been encountered before, much like the bumpers in a bowling alley. By allowing the ball to traverse its path while ensuring it stays on course, leaders can help their team members avoid pitfalls and achieve success.

One reason this step is so hard is that the best way to do it is to have effective metrics. This practice is HARD. And a skill many of us have yet to practice well. When you have good metrics in place, they will tell the story. If we are watching email volume, meeting updates, and time at a desk and such to determine if your team is motivated, delivering, and successful, then we will drift toward micromanagement, not empowerment. With good metrics comes the trust that the metrics will show you when quality work is not being performed. One of the things just as hard as developing good metrics is clearly and effectively communicating them to your team and showing them how you will handle accountability.

First and foremost you must respect your team as your equals. Each team member is unique, with different personalities, and sometimes we struggle to understand our colleagues fully. However, it's important to appreciate everyone primarily as individuals, rather than just as colleagues or team members. When we prioritize our relationships as human beings, our work tends to flow more smoothly.

It is amazing how hard this can be to do well. We know the mind remembers negative feedback much more highly than positive feedback. Yet, when things are going well, we can often forget to address it; when things are going badly, we might address it too heavily. As a manager, I used to keep a large sticky note on my monitor that read "START WITH WINS." This was because I had a tendency (and still often do) to get straight to business and move forward. This left my team feeling unseen and deflated. In addition to appreciating my team early and often, I had to ensure my feedback was clear and genuine. I couldn't just say (for the 100th time), "Great job last week." I had to be clear about what went well and why it mattered.

Authenticity also needs to be something we as leaders practice and live by daily instead of just a catch phrase in an attempt to gain others trust. The idea of "do what I say and not what I do" can be seen in any industry or operation. Staff, like children as they grow up, learn to see through phony efforts by leaders and may even actually attempt to undermine the work being done. If we as leaders are not true to who we are, I mean truly understanding who we are, we will all fail. I work with others on doing self evaluations and exercises designed to help them get outside of their comfort zone to learn and grow. You need to be willing to accept feedback and look at how you actually present yourself to others.

That's the way you completely present your ver sion in front of team members. And despite knowing the facts communication in this manners will differently impact on their motivation level

Greetings Linkedin! I'm fortunate enough to say that my eyes were opened to just how important this actually is several years ago. I had just transitioned out of the Army and started my first civilian job. Needless to say, after 10 years and 1 combat tour, I had "a certain style of communicating". This very direct, assertive, no- compromise way of communicating did not go far with my team. I suppose I assumed that if this worked in life-threatening work situations, why not every situation? How wrong I was. Someone showed me a video of me presenting information and I was shocked. That started a journey of self-awareness which was not pretty but necessary. Now I pride myself of being very approachable with an adaptive communicative style.

Whether it's providing guidance, offering feedback, or addressing concerns, I adapt my communication style to resonate with the preferences, personalities, and circumstances of my team. Some team members just need the basics and some need a detailed description and to know the "why" behind something.
