You’re struggling to keep your team on track. How can you communicate deadlines more effectively?

Establishing pragmatic deadlines is foundational for effective communication. Avoid committing to unrealistic dates that could strain your team; instead, conduct a thorough assessment of time and resources required for each task. Incorporate contingency buffers for unforeseen challenges. Employ project management tools to craft a transparent timeline, highlighting dependencies and key milestones, facilitating a comprehensive understanding among clients and stakeholders.

The scenario we are working with says the team has already been vetted and is on site. This leads me to believe the schedule has been approved by the team and the subs. It's time for a meeting to find out why the team is drifting and letting time slide. On a multi-year project, teams tend to keep an eye on the end date and lose their perspective of the entire build. That's when I call in the subcontractors along with our team and lay out the issues. If it is a material delay, we figure out how to work around it. If it is a labor issue we investigate getting more labor, or some sort of relief for the sub. Induction is the biggest problem on any build. One thing to avoid is extending the finish date. If you need more time, start earlier.

Definitely set realistic goals that are obtainable, nothing worse or demoralizing than falling short of expectations. Keep goals short to keep moral up, which in turn keeps employees and production up and profitable

It is critical to provide clarity on what the benefits of completing a project on time are and what the consequences are for late deliverables. This communication needs to be clear for the team and clear for the impact to each team member individually. Too often we take the view that I either can't influence timely deliverables or can't see it (or feel the impact) from my house.

Precise and consistent communication of expectations is imperative for project success. Articulate the project's scope, objectives, and deliverables, elucidating each team member's role and contributions. Clearly convey task deadlines and associated consequences for non-compliance. Utilize diverse communication channels—email, phone, meetings, or chat—to ensure continuous updates. Foster an environment for team feedback and questions, promptly addressing any concerns or issues that arise. This approach cultivates a shared understanding and promotes collaborative alignment toward project goals.

Communication starts immediately upon project award. We have a "turnover" package which outlines alot of the details on a project from contact names, main supplier contacts, schedule and the project expectations. When a job starts with a clear path the more likely it is to progress successfully.The use of technology helps expedite critical information as its needed.
