If your underlying processes - and more importantly - experience is poor, then no system will provide a return on investment. One area where technology can play a pivotal role is in the analysis of employee sentiment. Some problems are likely universal in any organization and others may be limited to specific business units or leaders. Using the data you have to understand what the problems are and where they exist will allow you to investigate and intervene.

I think it starts before that. From the moment you have a candidate, it’s a must that before hiring you explain the role very clearly and also talk about the company’s DNA, rhythm and goals. Many times, in the rush to hire someone, certain relevant information can be omitted to avoid jeopardizing the hire, however, this is where commitment and performance issues begin. When we try to sell something different to what actually is, the employee may already be disappointed during their first month. For example. If we sell a 9-5 work schedule but in reality, colleagues and leaders expect you to work a 9-9 and we do not disclose that from the beginning, disappointment will soon come knocking, regardless of benefits.

Data is key! When assessing workplace environment, I’ve found that employees are scared to answer with complete honesty so employers not always hold the best data. I very often suggest to bring on an external assessment company to guarantee confidentiality and transparency. Also, I’d invest time trying to understand why people leave (exit surveys) so any action we decide to take is based on real pain points we want to target specifically.
