The truth is the speed of technology development is beyond what human can cope with. I personally aim to be a T-shaped professional, with the goal of learning a little bit about many things in my domain and then niche into 2-3 topics. This way, you cover several topics but only focus your learnings on niche topics that are relevant to your job.

While managing the demands of a full-time job, staying updated on the latest technology can be challenging. Here are some methods that have helped me: Stay curious and have a genuine interest in exploring about emerging technologies. Don't just focus on learning for the sake of knowledge acquisition; instead, actively seek ways to leverage new technologies. Understanding how these technologies can benefit you and your work adds purpose to your learning journey. Choose one specific technology of interest and dedicate at least 30 minutes per day to learning about it. Focus on technologies that align with your core competencies and professional objectives, and resist the urge to chase every new trend to avoid getting overwhelmed.

Before immersing yourself in the plethora of blogs, podcasts, newsletters, and courses available on the latest technology topics, it's crucial to have a clear understanding of what you aim to learn and why. Identify the specific skills, knowledge, or competencies necessary to enhance your product management performance, address existing challenges, or prepare for future opportunities. Consider how these align with your product vision, goals, and priorities. Additionally, determine how you will measure progress and outcomes. Setting SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) learning goals enables you to focus your efforts, steer clear of distractions, and monitor your achievements.

Don't set specific learning goals. Instead, immerse yourself in technology by following your curiosity and intuition. This approach allows you to explore broadly and discover emerging trends and tools that might not be immediately apparent. By being open to serendipitous learning, you might uncover insights and innovations that structured goals could overlook, fostering creativity and adaptability in a fast-paced tech landscape.

Continuous Learning, Networking, Reading, Podcasts and Videos, Hands-On Practice, Conferences & Meetups and Follow Thought Leaders. By integrating these practices into your routine, you can enhance your understanding of the tech landscape and better prepare for future advancements. Remember, the key is to be proactive and make learning a continuous part of your career development.

Be very careful about the people you follow. Many are focused on getting impressions and likes, so sometimes they try to come up with certain content that may be confusing to new PMs. I see headlines like ... MVPs are overrated, or agile is dead, etc. Follow people who have had actual experience in the things they claim they are experts in. If possible, find mentors who can help you navigate and filter through the noise.

Once you've established your learning objectives, it's essential to identify the most suitable sources of information and education that align with your needs, preferences, and budget. With numerous options available—including blogs, podcasts, newsletters, books, courses, webinars, workshops, conferences, and communities—not all will offer the same level of reliability, relevance, or engagement. Conduct thorough research and evaluation to pinpoint those that deliver the highest value, credibility, and quality for your learning goals. Seek out sources that are regularly updated, boast positive reviews and ratings, offer practical examples and insights, and cater to your preferred learning style and pace.

Being a Product Manager, with more than 7 years in industry, I have experienced this situation within my team. I tackled it with a novel approach, besides investing my time in research and motivating my team for constant learning. Embedding a Sandbox Team: 1: I proposed the idea of embedding a sandbox team within the tech department. There might be a possibility that you work on entirely different technology but you want to be updated in other different tech products which might not be useful in your day to day activities but they can be thought provoking. Follow sources from PM who are in the industry for sometime, engage in KT or informational conversations. Reflect if you can use the new tech in your current work space.
