You’re struggling to improve your writing process. What are some creative ways to get unstuck?

Take a walk. Lift your head, and look around. Of course, you have a notebook and a trusted pen, or what you use to record your thoughts. When you start to think and/or remark to yourself about something, stop and record. There is so much inspiration all around us, and that leads to opening the creative vein of writing/thinking/musing/journeying...Remember, you are a writer - so write. It will eventually lead to creating what you need.

One of the best ways to improve your writing style is to get experience dabbling in as many different formats and audiences. Ever written a greeting card? How about a poem? Staying sharp as a writer means being fluid with your approach. You can take a favourite piece of yours and repurpose it for a different audience.

This is gonna be fun! Journalling is the core of my writing. I don't follow any journalling method but write whatever comes to my mind. It can be something that is bothering me mentally. It can be what I saw when I went somewhere. My interaction with someone. Whatever hits me on that day. The more something is weighing on your mind, the less breathing space there is for your thoughts and writing. Do whatever you feel like doing except writing. Our mind works as such that any mundane activity or chore will really unlock your creativity. I simply clean my bookshelf, cook and tend to my garden. WALKS! Take walks every day! No matter how short. Nothing gives breathing space for your mind like walks. Keep experimenting with your process.

One thing I have learnt over the years is that content and ideas are all around us. From your conversations with people, to the ones you have with yourself. When you think about these stuff deeply, you can definitely get ideas on what to write. What helps me is reflecting on conversations and experiences, getting topics to write on from them and saving them in a document. Ensure you always get them out of your head or else you'll forget.

Consider free writing not only before your writing session but also sometimes while writing, when the going gets rough. This enables your writer's brain to open up and loosen up, especially after it has exhausted itself with building well-crafted and logically accurate sentences. Just letting it flow without control activates another, more intuitive, and effortless type of thinking (for the very same reason, taking an intentional break every 45 or 50 minutes actually helps you focus better). Then, return to the slow type of thinking and organize your free-flowing thoughts.

Mind mapping or graphic organizers help a lot in brain storming the ideas first and organising them later on. When someone gets stuck in his writing process, he must unstuck himself by gathering his ideas in form of a mind-map. After collecting ideas, he can add details to his already generated ideas. Mind mapping can also help in creating logical connection among the ideas.

I never approach my writing unprepared, expecting an inspired state to dawn on me. Writing is rarely an improvisational process. If you come to your desk with either digital or written extensive notes organized into a linear, coherent argumentation and including the references you intend to use, the only thing that is left for you to do is the process of phrasing itself. You will not need to ponder what to write, but only how to write it. This can provide you with sufficient space for experimentation and honing. You can even enjoy the writing hours since that fundamental anxiety is gone.

Mind mapping helps me a lot. Before I start writing, I ensure I have a clear structure of how I want my piece to flow. Once that's done, I just start tbh, no matter how silly or ridiculous that first sentence sounds. As I progress, I build on it, and make more tweaks along the way. It's one thing to know what you want to write and another thing to know how you want it structured.

I enjoy using Google's Jamboard with my clients. I also have a client who loves coming up with intricate visuals for his book via PowerPoint. Mind maps can definitely help with large ideas, especially when you're in the outline phase, no matter the genre.

You can also mindmap using sticky notes or index cards. First, write down your topics and headings one by one. Then, brainstorm subtopics one at a time. Finally, arrange all the headings and subtopics in logical order. After this structure has been arranged, fill in each topic and subtopic with text accordingly. Then you have the start of an essay, which later, you can expand into a book.

Testing different writing formats is a good way to try to overcome a writing slump. Various format include free writing, mind mapping, or using prompts to ignite creativity. Consider different physical activities, especially daily exercising, or take breaks to give your mind a rest and allow it to refresh. I personally find exercising extremely effective and all the more necessary as we are constantly sitting behind a computer these days. Start working with others to ask for their feedback. Maybe join writing groups to receive support and inspiration. Changing your environment and/or working routing may also spark new ideas and allow you to set said a writer’s block.

Every writer has a unique format but it might take a while to find what fits you perfectly. So play around with different writing styles and genres until you find what works for you. For me, not matter what it is that I am writing, I infuse my fun, funny and sarcastic personality into my writing. And if it's fiction, I also ensure one of my characters has some of my traits. It just adds that special touch to my writing, and it makes me, me.

Lack of improvement=complacency. Experiment and try out various formats. If you always start in a scene, try writing with a solid structure- a beginning, a middle, and a scene. Also, try out various voices and tones. You would be surprised to see how challenging and satisfying it can be. I personally do this thing- I ask my 2 friends to give me two random words. One might say Rainbow while the other would say Dinosaur. Now, my job is to write something that has the two. The words can be anything. The more disconnected, the better. You can even make it more challenging by limiting the genre, voice, characters, or the word limit.

I like the idea of experimenting with writing formats, especially once an outline is already created. See what's resonating with you. If you're writing shorter form articles/LI content, see what resonates with your target audience. Are you providing value with the formats you're testing out, or do you need to do further experimentation?

Haikus can be fun to write to get started and to warm up for your essay writing. Then, writing a short poem and then a long poem can help you start writing in long form that can eventually become a book. There are all kinds of tools and tips online you can use before creating your masterpiece.

Giving feedback as a book coach is so beneficial for my clients. This way, they receive feedback on each chapter and understand what's working/not working rather than waiting to receive feedback after a full first draft is complete.

Oh my, when I started writing especially, I ensured I got feedback from my close writing buddies. This helps you know what's working and what isn't, how you need to improve and what you can do to get better. It has helped me grow immensely as a writer. I have also used some tools like Grammarly and Hemingway to see how I can improve my writing.

If you're feeling stuck, seeking feedback can offer a valuable solution. Joining a peer review group or online writing communities can be very useful. Try to get feedback from beta readers who match your target audience and can provide insightful perspectives. These can often spark new ideas and styles that can elevate your writing. If it's in your budget, consider hiring a writing or book coach or taking a class.

I am a lazy reader when it comes to books. But I still read about 4-5 in a year because I know how important it is in honing my skills. I also consume a lot of articles. The thing is, the more you read, the better you get at expanding your vocabulary and improving your writing style. You learn new words and how to better construct words. You also get to see different writing styles, see how you can adopt them or just learn how to make yours much better by seeing the work of other writers.

I always say, "Read in the genre you want to write in." If you're not reading in that genre, then it'll be much more difficult to find ways in which to generate the right content for your goals and your target readership.

Reading exposes you to a myriad of writing styles. I often advise writers to initially read for pleasure or learning, reserving a subsequent read for a more technical review. During the second reading, consider annotating the piece and dissecting its content. What aspects of your favorite author's writing appeal to you? Is it their word choice or their sentence structure? What elements do you find less appealing? If you find it helpful to engage physically with the material, use highlighters, circles, and underlines to identify passages that resonate with you and those you wish to emulate in your work.

Reading helps in many ways to develop and improve your writing style. Reading from many different genres helps to expand your thinking and thought process. Reading young adult (YA) novels can also simplify the process and retaining good writing and organizational skills. James Holzhauer, JEOPARDY proclaimed that much of what he learned was from reading as many YA books as he could from the library.

When I hit a wall, I step away from the keyboard. It's counterintuitive, but a change of scenery or a quick walk often reignites my thought processes. Imagine the mind as a garden; sometimes, it needs fresh air to flourish. I also dive into reading. Not just any reading, but material outside my usual genres. It's like adding exotic spices to a familiar dish. New styles and ideas can come from unexpected sources, lighting up the path out of writer's block. I also try free writing. I set a timer and spill my thoughts without censoring. Think of it as a brainstorming session where every idea, no matter how wild, gets a seat at the table. This unfiltered flow often uncovers gems hidden in the clutter of my conscious mind.

Science shows that even small breaks (e.g., washing the dishes) gets the prefrontal cortex to downshift so the rest of your brain can "wander" and creativity is more accessible. But don't underestimate the power of longer breaks, which allow you to understand you are more than "just" a writer. Go have experiences. Feel things. Writing and the problems related to it have a way of looking different after that, and usually that means you see solutions you didn't see before the time off. It's like marathon running. The world will tell you to run a race every day. Seasoned runners, however, know the best distances and times come after sufficient recovery.

Most people come down with writers block when they are burnt out. To avoid this you need to take occasional breaks from writing, this could be just focusing in something else, taking a walk, doing the things you love, taking a nap. Whatever it is that refuels you, do that for sometime, then go back to what you were writing later and see how your creative juice overflows.

Exploring creative ways to break through writer's block can transform your writing process. Consider immersing yourself in diverse reading materials. From books to blogs, encountering different perspectives and styles can ignite fresh ideas. A stroll outside, in a local park, can also do wonders. The tranquility and beauty of nature often stimulate creative thoughts. Another approach is to put yourself in a creative mindset through activities that can shift your focus and allow inspiration to flow. When an idea strikes, quickly jot down your thoughts. Sometimes, engaging in physical activity can help unleash your creativity further, allowing you to return to your writing with a renewed sense of purpose and energy.

There's no shame in taking a break from a piece. Pushing yourself to complete a thought or work through a piece can often do more harm than good.

Try using a writing prompt to spark your creativity. I've especially found visual writing prompts helpful, such as a picture (art) or a photograph of a place or a person or even a landscape. Look at the picture and imagine the where/when/who/why/how in any form of writing you usually favor or you think might fit. Be it a short poem, a blog post, a general article, or even flash fiction or a short story.

Sometimes, under the influence of the filmic representation of writers, we think that writing is an inspired, uncontrolled state. This is rarely the case. Professional writing can be a very slow, self-disciplined, and diligent process, dotted with numerous frustrating moments of stuckness. So, instead of expecting that rose garden, accept that this is the nature of writing. Start writing in fixed hours and stay there even when you get stuck in front of a blank document. These are the moments in which your writing is actually developing to its next, more conscious level. When you seem to reach a dead end, you can always get up, do something mundane, or take a short walk. This may help brighten up your vision. Then, return to the desk.

Try moving locations. Move from inside to outside, to a library, coffee shop, garden, et cetera. The process might ignite some inspiration. People watching never hurts!

Reading some of the best works of notable writers & authors, thought-provoking books, & articles gets your mind stimulated by ideas. 2. There's no alternative to writing. A true blue writer knows best that there's a load of content in everything. What you see, what you hear, what you think, and even what you talk about. So, make every use of that skill. Keep writing aimlessly because playing along with miscellaneous genres and prompts broadens the creative cells and hence contributes to an adept writer.

One of my go-to writer's block remedies is to revisit the big idea of the piece. Often, I reach an impasse when I'm lost in the minutiae of a minor, supporting argument. If I just back up and give myself permission to abandon the particular leg of thought I'd been trying to work out, returning to the central question or activating passion of the piece, I find the block disappears! Sometimes I return to the challenging scene or argument and work it out. But sometimes I discover that it wasn't necessary to the piece after all.
