Most Technical competency development programs are engineering centred, and foundational mindset is solutions focussed. IT industry has focused on developing a solution and then going around trying to find a problem, many of them force fitted into the sales pitch. The genuine problem focused professionals follow the Pareto principles. Additionally, technology has analysed historical data & is post-mortem driven. Impact was only on long term decisions and strategy. Today, Tech industry, with Edge, Cloud, 5G and AI, is mapping systems of engagement, helping solve real-time in process challenges. Hence, asking the right questions, broadening the scope, leveraging system thinking and jugad become a mandatory need for Technology professionals.

You need time to develop the problem-solving skills. For some, it comes more naturally and for some, you need to work on it. I will always start with self-reflection and understanding where am I. What's the purpose? Why do I need it and what is the motivation? Once that is done, create a plan & execute it.

It is important to have a clear analysis of the fact/scenario to define the problem, clearly define the scope of work and the methodology that will be applied in problem solving, define the core and operational team and the schedule of steps/deliveries.

Una estrategia común es utilizar técnicas de análisis como el árbol de problemas o el diagrama causa-efecto (Ishikawa). Estas herramientas ayudan a visualizar las relaciones entre diferentes elementos del problema y a identificar las causas raíces subyacentes. A partir de estas causas raíces, se pueden identificar los componentes individuales del problema.

Don't bother trying to work with the bigger goals. It will be more misleading & harmful. Make it real and understand how much time you can allocate to developing or enhancing these skills further. If you work in smaller parts, you can have better visibility.

Consider whether the challenge is due to lack of aptitude or being entrenched in old habits? Often in long term roles problem solving becomes stagnant simply due to lack of using neural resources. The brain loves patterns because it’s more efficiency, but it also uses less brain power. Try deliberately challenging yourself with new problems and projects!

Feedback is helpful. Be open about it. Be humble & respectful when seeking feedback. Don't take it personally. Work on it if you can. Try collaborating with others, and most importantly find what works for you.

Survey stakeholders, follow up through small sprints, receive and give feedback. The definition of the schedule aims at a better follow-up of the actions with the team involved.
