You’re struggling to demonstrate your leadership skills at work. What can you do to show your potential?

You need to know your strengths in the first place and leverage on them to be the best that you can be as a leader. Taking constructive feedback also helps with identifying your strengths and improving on them. Finally be teachable, do not assume you know it all.

Before you can show your leadership skills, you need to know what they are. Think about the situations where you have taken initiative, solved problems, or influenced others positively. What skills did you use? How did they contribute to the outcome? Write down your strengths and examples of how you have applied them in your work. It is important to be attentive to what others reflect back onto you. We are often not very in tune with how we come across and instead of listening to the reactions, we focus on our intentions. We rarely come across exactly the way we intend. Make looking for this implicit feedback your strength and you will constantly improve as a leader.

Read paper books or listen to audio books from known experts on the subject of effective interpersonal relationships and leadership best practices. Some great books on effective human relations are "How to Win Friends and Influence People", "Public Speaking and Influencing Men of Business" and "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" by Dale Carnagie. The other I have in mind is "Skill With People" (a nice short read) by Les Giblin. Another worthwhile read is "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People". These books helped me in my IT Support positions with deescalating situations where a customer is angry or exteremely frustrated, how to correct others withou causing resentment, mentoring others and making new friends.

We often spend more time reflecting on our limitations or challenges, than we do on our strengths. Instead, we are better served by setting aside time to consider things such as: 1. What did I do well today? 2. What was my greatest success this week? 3. What am I doing when I feel happiest? 4. What would my closest friends and family cite as my strengths? Setting aside time to reflect on what is going well, what tasks or activities we enjoy, and what others admire in us can go a long way in allowing us to lean into those qualities, and amplify our strengths. Those who are doing what they love are poised to lead, explicitly through sharing knowledge or simply by example.

Lead by example, show accountability for your actions, and actively seek opportunities to contribute ideas and solutions. Volunteer for leadership roles in team projects or initiatives, and seek feedback from supervisors to continuously improve. Consistently exhibiting qualities such as decisiveness, empathy, and the ability to inspire and motivate others will help showcase your leadership abilities.

Identify gaps/problems (however small), communicate proposed solutions to your manager and take the initiative to either implement them yourself or engage and manage your fellow colleagues as a team to execute the task.

In addition to seeking feedback on your strengths, actively inquire about your potential as a leader. Ask others how they perceive your leadership qualities and if there are specific areas where they see you excelling or where you could benefit from further development. This broader perspective helps you gain a comprehensive understanding of your leadership potential and provides valuable insights into areas you might not have considered. Embrace this feedback as a roadmap for growth, enabling you to refine your skills and approach based on a diverse range of opinions and observations.

Let's be honest, listening well can be hard. Listening to feedback, even the well-meaning constructive type, can be even more challenging. There are a couple of ways to seek feedback: 1. Directly - ask your manager, peers, or stakeholders what's going well and what can be improved on. Consider creating an anonymous Google form so collaborators or clients can leave feedback anytime. 2. Indirectly through listening- Practice active listening by giving your full attention to others. Ask questions and paraphrase often to ensure that you're interpreting a message as it is intended. Active listening gives you feedback on workgroup norms (like how "leaders" engage with others or how they emerge), while demonstrating engagement

You always need to seek feedback from your superiors, colleagues, friends as well as teammates. This will give you an idea about how your relationship with them (interpersonal communication), and the areas you need to focus and improve.

Consider seeking responsibilities that involve cross-functional collaboration. Engaging with teams outside your immediate department exposes you to diverse perspectives, enhances your interpersonal skills, and showcases your ability to navigate different work dynamics. This not only broadens your leadership impact but also positions you as a versatile leader capable of fostering collaboration across various organizational facets.

Some things I have found helpful are: Not getting fluttered or allowing the situation impair one’s confidence. Pay attention to discussions and read wide about the industry / ecosystem your Company operates in. Understand the policies and regulations that impact the operations of the Company. Spend time to have a good understanding of your business model and proactively seek ways to proffer areas of improvement. Spend time to understand the financials of your business and the strategic goals and objectives the Company has set for the current year and other short term and long term goals. Mastering the above will position one to give informed advise and solutions . Engage more in business partnering functions within your Company.

Taking on new responsibilities gives chances to develop leadership qualities. Through leading in new responsibilities, such qualities can be honed through learning the ropes on handling a project or challenge.

Taking more tasks and responsibilities sounds like a good idea, but be mindful those tasks/projects are aligned with your goals, give you visibility and results and not just become extra unpaid work.

Carpe diem! Leadership is about delivering results and influencing others. Seize every opportunity to demonstrate those outcomes. - contribute in meetings: share ideas, a different perspective, be curious - ask questions - volunteer to lead initiatives or projects - ask for mentorship Remember, if your inner voice tries to talk you out of it, learn to be uncomfortable, accept the challenge and figure it out.

Clear and confident communication tailored to different audiences is an essential leadership skill. It helps to build trust and understanding. Even when facing challenges or uncertainties, maintaining clarity and confidence in communication shows strength and determination. Adapting one's communication style to connect with diverse audiences shows flexibility and empathy, crucial attributes for influential leaders. Ultimately, demonstrating consistent clarity and confidence in communication, even during difficult times, reinforces a leader's ability to inspire and guide others, strengthening their leadership presence.

Show up consistently. Even if you feel self-conscious, had a poor response the previous day, push through the emotions and self-doubt and continue to show up in every conversations, emails, meetings.

Moreover, when you genuinely listen to your audience, it deepens your understanding and enables you to tailor your communication style to connect more effectively with them.

In my experiences, Clearly state your message without ambiguity. Use precise terms and avoid vague expressions. Structure your communication logically. Start with an introduction, followed by key points, and conclude with a summary. sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Consider using charts, graphs, or diagrams to illustrate complex concepts. Ask clarifying questions to ensure you understand their perspective. Adjust your tone based on the context. Be empathetic and approachable.

Interestingly, showing great leadership skills does not require you to be in any leadership position. I’ve found it extremely useful to show genuine curiosity to my coworkers’ responsibilities, and after developing an understanding of their work scope, i ask them: “What can I do to help you?” This simple question has proven to strengthen the collaborative atmosphere between myself and my colleagues and further empowered them to seek my assistance, as well as given me another contact whom i can seek for assistance

Leaders collaborate, delegate responsibility, empower, engage, and involve the team. When efforts get noticed and recognized publicly, when the leader is a hands-on supporter ready with workable solutions for the challenges faced by the team, when the team inputs are not only asked for but also accepted and implemented when found relevant and appropriate, when decisions do not seem imposed; the leader will be successful in having a cohesive, diligent, and efficient team. Nurturing an empowered and progressive squad is the biggest strength of a leader.

Seek opportunities to work with colleagues on projects or initiatives, actively contributing ideas and solutions while supporting their growth and development. Delegate tasks and responsibilities to team members, providing guidance and resources as needed to help them succeed. Encourage open communication and feedback, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to contribute. Lead by example, demonstrating integrity, resilience, and a positive attitude in the face of challenges. By collaborating and empowering others, you showcase your ability to inspire and motivate teams, ultimately demonstrating your leadership potential and making a positive impact in the workplace.

Helping and encouraging others is only half the battle. The extent of your generosity and whether you surpass your goals matter little if your colleagues lack honesty/fairness/courage. Such individuals may claim credit for your work or abandon you when your performance is assessed. Thus, while it's crucial to embody the values of absolute honesty, a strong work ethic, and bravery, it's equally important to recognize your limits. E.g. if a colleague admits to feeling intimidated by presenting alongside you, don't simply hand over the entire stage and offer extensive advice on presenting a project effectively. Instead, share the spotlight to ensure your contributions are not forgotten, preventing any misconceptions that you were absent.

You don’t have to micro manage. Empower your team members and subordinates. This will build trust, confidence and understanding among your team.

Know yourself and seek self improvement. Identify your weak areas and seek to learn from others on how to improve those areas. Demonstrating that you are never above learning is a great quality in a leader and your leadership will recognize this.

You never know until you try. You might think you’re great at something but then you get into a situation and get the wind knocked out of you. Use those moments to refine your craft. Also, never let your mindset/skillset become a limited part of your game—you can always adapt. I used to hate sales/ think I wasn’t good at it. Then I actually did some sales, and yeah, it wasn’t pretty. I wouldn’t say I’m an amazing salesman, but I am definitely glad I didn’t limit myself from honing that skill.

PART 2 Your boss's boss? The higher the level, the more powerful the players. And they value personal loyalty more than job competence. Maybe they don't like it when you bypass your direct boss. Your best bet? Option 1: Be loyal to your boss, stay in his shadow, and help him move up so that he decides to keep you by his side. Option 2: Get irrefutable evidence of your boss's disloyalty (his incompetence is irrelevant) and give it to your boss's boss along with your pledge of loyalty and access to value that only you can offer.
