Understanding your boss’s goals is crucial for improving your relationship. Learn their objectives, priorities, and challenges. Summarise their goals back to them to confirm on your understanding. Give a list of your actions and its priorities towards achieving their goals. Make sure they are clear and agree on the actions and priorities. Understand and confirm your role & responsibilities (expectations) and boundaries or constraints.

I think the 1st milestone to understand his/her objectives is to stablish a confident relationship based on your specific added value. Once this achieved, being reactive to fit your role with the strategy to be communicated. Without confidence, no real communication occurs.

Both informal and formal communications are mandatory and to be built. Informal arises with your active interest not to satisfy him/her, rather showing building up towards team's objective. Formal ones, should be under a template with indicators and actiosn lists, periodically and tracked.

Check with them for reporting or updating expectations. It needs to be presented in a concise and easily understandable for all of the people involved who are reading or taking action on it. Always consider if the current or potential issues that you notice can be solved downstream, yourself or by your peers. If yes, then there is no need to clutter them with items that can be solved. Unless they specifically ask for it. Escalate immediately then follow up regularly when the impediment needs upper level help to remove it. Be proactive.
