All 6 things noted here are great advice. At the end of the day not all employee to boss relationships will be great. Sometimes its just not a good fit between two people. If you are struggling with it then you need to focus on being present, communicating and making conversation about what you can do to be a stronger team player. If that isn't received well and improve things - then you probably have a bad boss.

All of these recommendations are great but remember that relationships are built in two directions. It's not purely up to the worker to try to build a relationship with the boss. The boss needs to also be a willing participant in the process, and no one can force another person to create a relationship, want to talk or meet, or even to be civil and professional. If a boss is consistently unwilling to connect, and you've done everything that you can to try to establish a relationship and have been unsuccessful, the odds are that it's their issues at play, not yours! If the environment is toxic and/or abusive, report the issue to HR, then move forward and move on as best you can.
